AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron Director of Athletics Larry Williams announced on Friday that he has extended men's soccer head coach Jared Embick's contract, keeping him at the helm of the storied program through the 2022 season.
The extension was formally approved by the UA Board of Trustees at their meeting on Wednesday.
"The University of Akron has many distinctive programs, and the men's soccer program is certainly one of those shining stars," said Williams. "Jared's leadership on and off the field is to be commended. He is one of the best soccer coaches in the country at any level. He takes pride in developing the full student who excels in the classroom and on the pitch. With this extension we are able to continue to build on the success and tradition of Akron Soccer."
"I am happy to extend my contract at Akron," Embick commented. "I would like to thank our Athletic Director Larry Williams and the Board of Trustees for their support and belief in our program. The University as a whole and the community have always been very supportive of the program and our student-athletes. Together we have built something unique and special with the soccer program at Akron, a tradition of excellence on and off the field. I know we still have many goals we want to achieve. We want to continue to work together with the University, the students, the Northeast Ohio and Akron community to continue to make this a program we can all be proud of."
During Embick's time at Akron, the Zips have posted the highest winning percentage in the nation with an overall record of 204-43-29 (.792), including a 56-6-4 (.879) mark in Mid-American Conference play, while securing 11 conference tournament titles, 12 trips to the NCAA Tournament, five College Cup berths and three appearances in the NCAA final.
The Zips have registered a 94-30-13 (.734) ledger in Embick's six campaigns as head coach, earning six NCAA Tournament berths and three College Cup appearances, including advancing to the title match in 2018. Akron's 94 victories during that span lead all of men's Division I.
In each of those six seasons, Akron has captured either the regular and postseason MAC titles, including winning both in four of those campaigns.
Akron posted its 18th consecutive double-digit victory campaign in 2018 and concluded the year with a 15-7-2 ledger after advancing to the title match of the College Cup for the fourth time in program history.
To reach the NCAA title match, the unseeded Zips bested Rider in the opening round before going on the road to eliminate No. 20 Syracuse, top-seeded Wake Forest, three-time defending NCAA Champion Stanford, and No. 4 Michigan State as part of a nine-game winning streak.
The Zips will open their 2019 campaign traveling to Xavier for a season-opening contest on Aug. 30 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Deposits of $25 are now being taken for new 2019 season tickets, while invoices for returning season ticket holders will be mailed out in March for renewal of their seats for the 2019 campaign. Fans with questions about new or existing season tickets may call or text the C.P. and Cornelia S.
