Akron Men’s Soccer Unveils Challenging Spring Schedule

AKRON MEN'S SOCCER SPRING 2019 ROSTER (PDF)
AKRON, Ohio – The Akron men's soccer team is set to face a challenging spring exhibition schedule, one that includes five dates at FirstEnergy Stadium, Zips' seventh-year head coach Jared Embick announced on Thursday.
Akron is set to return seven starters in 2019, including 2018 All-Mid-American Conference performers, senior Skye Harter (Copley, Ohio), junior David Egbo (Enugu, Nigeria) and sophomores Carlo Ritaccio (Westbury, N.Y.) and Sam Tojaga (Erie, Pa.) from a squad that captured the Mid-American Conference tournament title en route to advancing to title match of the the College Cup for the fourth time in program history on the strength of an overall record of 15-7-2 mark.
The Zips will open their spring slate traveling to Pittsburgh, Pa., to square off versus the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the USL (United Soccer League) on Friday, March 1. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
The Zips travel down I-71 to battle the Columbus Crew in a closed exhibition tilt on Sunday, March 3 at 11 a.m. The contest with the Crew is a closed scrimmage and spectators will not be permitted to watch the action.
Akron opens its home slate at FirstEnergy Stadium battling Lake Erie College on March 3 at 5 p.m. The Storm posted a 9-6-4 record a season ago. The contest will be the first of eight games across five dates for the Zips on their home pitch.
Akron will host Sigma FC's U-21 and U-19 squads on March 10 at FirstEnergy Stadium at 1 and 3 p.m., respectively.
Akron opens the month of April battling Kentucky in a 1 p.m. tilt on April 6, before taking on Notre Dame College later that day in a 5 p.m. match at the National Youth Football and Sports Complex at the Professional Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
The Wildcats advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament in 2018 on the strength of a 19-2-1 mark, before falling to eventual national champion Maryland, 1-0.
The Falcons posted a 14-4-1 mark a season ago, qualifying for the NCAA Division II Tournament where Notre Dame dropped a 2-1 second-round decision to West Chester.
The following weekend, Akron hosts Michigan and Case Western Reserve at 6 and 8 p.m., respectively, on April 13.
The Wolverines were 12-5-4 a year ago, including a 4-2-2 mark in the Big Ten Conference advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament where Michigan was bested by Notre Dame on penalty kicks, 11-10.
The Spartans turned in their best-ever campaign in 2018 advancing to the sectional final of the NCAA Division III Championship before ending their season with a 16-4-2 ledger following a 2-1 setback versus Calvin.
The Zips close out their home spring schedule hosting Ashland and Ohio Valley, on April 19 at 4 and 7 p.m., respectively, at the Shrank Practice Facility.
The Eagles, coached by former Akron assistant coach Oliver Slawson, made a dramatic run to NCAA Division II Tournament, where Ashland was bettered in overtime, 4-3, by Saginaw Valley State.
The Fighting Scots capped a 18-6-1 mark in 2018 advancing to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division II Tournament, where Ohio Valley dropped a 2-0 decision against Fort Hays State.
Akron rounds out its spring slate with a 4 p.m. tilt at Dayton on April 27. The Flyers registered a 9-6-4 record a season ago, advancing to the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
All spring exhibition contests at FirstEnergy Stadium are open to the public and free of charge.
