Zips Conclude Regular Season Competition with 201-96 Win Over Ohio

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's swimming and diving team earned a 201-96 Mid-American Conference victory over Ohio in its final regular season competition. The Zips went 6-1 in dual action, including a 4-0 mark against MAC opponents. Akron won 14 of the total 16 events contested.
The 200 medley relay team of freshman Lauren Cooper (Dublin, Ohio), sophomore Paula Garcia (Madrid, Spain), and seniors Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario) and Ragen Engel (Springfield, Ohio) placed first for the Zips, recording a time of 1:43.25. Akron also had a team place second in the event.
Ohio's Hannah Schlegel earned first in the 1000 freestyle, while sophomore Brooke Lamoureux (Belleville, Ontario) turned in a second-place finish in a time of 10:15.96. Recording an exciting third place finish was freshman McKenzie Rice (Liberty Township, Ohio) who beat the fourth place swimmer to the wall by just .26 seconds.
In the 200 freestyle Akron earned the top three times. Freshman Avery Movold (Prince George, British Columbia) touched the wall first in a time of 1:51.79. Senior Emma King (Centerville, Ohio) came in second with a time of 1:53.51, while junior Morgan Waggoner (Fremont, Ohio) took third (1:54.19).
Sophomore Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland) swam a 100 backstroke time of 56.10 to earn first in the event, while freshman Sarah Watson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) finished second in a time of 56.45.
In the 100 breaststroke, freshman Andrea Fischer (St. Paul, Minn.) recorded a first-place time of 1:04.05, while Garcia followed closely behind, taking second with a time of 1:04.75.
Junior Jessica Bonezzi (Wooster, Ohio) touched the wall first in the 200 butterfly (2:02.16), while junior Mackenzie Vargas (Roseville, Calif.) turned in a third place time of 2:04.97.
Fazekas swam to a victory in the 50 freestyle in a time of 23.38. Engle came in third in the event (23.91), while freshman Sofia Henell (Linkoping, Sweden) took fourth.
In the one-meter dive, junior Katelyn Applin (Dansville, N.Y.) won the event with a score of 285.60, earning a spot on Akron's top ten all-time list. Sophomore Andrea Bugariu (Troy, Mich.) recorded a score of 278.48 to place second and earn her NCAA diving zone cut, while freshman Kamryn Goodrick (Chesterland, Ohio) finished in third for the Zips with a score of 278.32. All three scores fell within the NCAA diving zone standards.
Engle won the 100 freestyle, recording a time of 51.51, while Waggoner was right behind her, finishing second in 51.52.
The pair of freshmen, Movold and Olivia Gardner (Bromsgrove, England), turned in the top two times in the 200 backstroke. Movold finished first in 2:01.04, while Gardner took second with a time of 2:03.15.
In the 200 breaststroke, Garcia took first with a time of 2:19.05, with followed by Fischer who placed second in a time of 2:19.18.
Hannah Schlegel earned a win for Ohio in the 500 freestyle, but Akron recorded the next three top swimmers. Watson (5:00.43), King (5:03.92) and Lamoureux (5:04.80) finished in second, third and fourth, respectively.
Nogaj took top honors in the 100 butterfly, recording a time of 53.93.
In the three-meter diving event, senior Karly Crail (Edgewood, Ky.) won the event with a career-high score of 306.30.
Nogaj earned her third individual win of the night, recording a time of 2:04.12 in the 200 IM.
The 400 freestyle relay team comprised of Engel, Fazekas, Henell and senior Hannah Smith (Beavercreek, Ohio) won the final event of the night with a time of 3:27.88.
Akron honored its seven seniors, Emily Christophersen (Noblesville, Ind.), Crail, Engel, Fazekas, King, Madison Myers (Akron, Ohio) and Smith, prior to the dual.
Up next, the Zips will prepare for MAC Championships which will take place Feb. 27-March 2. The meet will be hosted by Akron at Ocasek Natatorium.
