Akron Volleyball Celebrates Senior Night, Falls to Bowling Green in Straight Sets

AKRON, Ohio – Akron volleyball dropped a tough match to Bowling Green on Saturday night at James A. Rhodes Arena, 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 26-24).
Â
With the loss, Akron falls to 16-9 (9-5 MAC), while Bowling Green improves to 15-11 (9-5 MAC).Â
Â
Leading the way offensively was senior Elya Karsner (Frankfort, Ky.) and junior Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio) who finished with 15 and 10 kills, respectively. Junior setter Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) dished out 34 assists while adding five kills of her own.
Â
Defensively, junior libero Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) paced the back row with 21 digs, while Weigand another 12.Â
Â
The Zips found themselves down 8-4 early, until earning four of the next five points cut the deficit to one. A three-point run, thanks to kills by Karsner and junior Shelby Fulmer (Perrysburg, Ohio) as well as an error by BGSU put Akron ahead, 12-11.

Later in the set, the two teams were tied at 18, until the Falcons went on to take six of the next seven points, propelling them to a first-set victory.Â

Akron got up on BGSU early, taking a 5-2 lead courtesy of a solo block by senior Ashley Richardson (Doylestown, Ohio). The Zips held the lead heading into the midway point, until three consecutive points by the Falcons tied the set at 13.Â
Â
The set ended up being tied at 18 once again, until a late push by BGSU propelled it to another 25-21 victory in the second set.Â
Â
In the third set, there was an early 8-8 tie, until back-to-back kills by Adleta put Akron ahead by two. The Falcons would respond by taking four of the next five points, re-taking the lead 13-11. Down 16-13, the Zips were able to rattle off four consecutive points, thanks to kills by Karsner and Weigand as well as two errors by the Falcons.Â

Down 20-19, three consecutive kills by Adleta put Akron ahead 22-20, until a late push by the Falcons propelled them to take the set, 26-24, and ultimately the match.

The Zips will conclude their season on the road next weekend, heading to rival Kent State for the second half of the Wagon Wheel Challenge on Friday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m., followed by the final match of the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 5 p.m.
