Â
With the win, Akron improves to 16-7 (9-3 MAC), while Toledo falls to 7-17 (0-12 MAC).Â
Â
"It was great to get back on track. There were moments when we could have played a little cleaner, but we found long-enough stretches to get the separation we needed to win" said head coach Tom Hanna.
Â
Leading the way offensively was senior Elya Karsner (Frankfort, Ky.) and junior Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio) who finished with 13 kills a-piece. Junior setter Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) dished out 38 assists while adding four kills and three aces of her own.
Â
Sophomore Taylor Kuruzovich (Port Matilda, Pa.), Junior Shelby Fulmer (Perrysburg, Ohio) and Weigand each finished the match with three aces.
Â
Defensively, junior libero Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) paced the back row with 15 digs. Also contributing was Adleta and sophomore Teagan Ochaya (Mentor, Ohio) who finished with 12 and 11 kills, respectively.Â
Â
The Zips found themselves down 6-3 early in the first set, until a six-point run, which included two aces by Weigand, gave Akron a 9-6 lead. With Akron up 17-13, Toledo was able to claim 10 of the next 12 points, re-taking the lead 23-19. They went on to take the first set, 25-20.
Â
The Zips came out firing in the second set as two kills by each senior (Richardson and Karsner) gave Akron an early 4-1 lead. Later in the set the Zips held a 17-14 lead, which increased to 22-15, thanks to three errors by the Rockets as well as two consecutive aces Fulmer.
Â
Akron held its lead for the remainder of the set, claiming a 25-18 victory, tying the match at 1-1.Â
Â
The third set was a back-and-forth battle which saw seven ties throughout. Down 9-8, Akron put together three consecutive points, all of which were errors by Toledo, which gave the Zips a 11-9 lead. Another three-point run later in the set, thanks to two kills by senior Ashley Richardson (Doylestown, Ohio) and an ace by Kuruzovich propelled the Zips to a third-set victory, 25-20.
Â
The fourth set followed suit of the third, as once again there were seven ties throughout. The Rockets gained an early 10-6 lead; however the Zips would respond well by winning nine of the next 12 points, taking the lead, 15-13.Â
Â
Toledo responded with a four-point run of its own, re-taking the lead, 17-15. Akron showed its resiliency, as it responded in a big way, taking eight of the next 10 points, now leading 23-19. It went on to take the final set, 25-21, and ultimately the match.
Â
