CLEVELAND, Ohio – Junior Fabian Sunden (Sweden) was named Mid-American Golfer of the Week after becoming the first golfer in Akron program history to win the Firestone Invitational Individual Championship, the league announced Thursday.
Â
Sunden fired an 8-under par 208 tournament total (72-66-70) en route to leading the Zips to a fourth-place finish, 860 (-4), at the Firestone Country Club North Course, a par 72 that stretches 7,125 yards.
Â
He followed a career-best 6-under par second round with a 70 (-2) final round effort to capture individual medalist honors. In addition, Sunden recorded a hole-in-one on the par-3, 201-yard hole No. 11, it was his first career hole-in-one in tournament play.
Â
Sunden ranked 11th overall after the first round even-par 72 performance, but ascended to the top of the leaderboard with the 6-under par ledger. He entered the final day tied for first place with Gustav Fransson (Old Dominion) as both golfers held a one-stroke advantage over the field.
Â
Sunden's solid final round of 13 pars, two birdies and an ace proved to be enough to win the individual title. In addition, Sunden played 18-holes, three 9's, of bogey-free golf with a combined 10 birdies and the hole-in-one. Sunden posted a career-high 34 pars and 13 birdies in 54-holes of play.
