MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE MEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK RELEASE
Â
CLEVELAND, Ohio - University of Akron men's soccer junior David Egbo (Enugu, Nigeria) has been honored as the Mid-American Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday, Oct. 29. He shares the award with Jan Maertins of Northern Illinois.
Â
Additionally, Egbo was selected by College Soccer News and TopDrawerSoccer.com to its Men's Soccer National Teams of the Week, as well as being named the Summa Health Akron Men's Student-Athlete of the Week.
Â
Egbo turned in a stellar performance in sparking the Zips to a 3-0 victory over the Cougars in the squad's lone match of the week. He directed the Zips' offensive performance with a game-high five shots, including two on frame, and finished the night with a goal and two assists.
Â
Egbo earned the assist on what proved to be the game-winning tally by freshman Mani Austmann (Gardabaer, Iceland) in the fourth minute (3:29) before extending Akron's margin to 2-0 in the 37th minute (36:27) delivering a shot from 10 yards out that found the corner of the net courtesy of an assist from freshman Henrique Cruz (Fortaleza, Brazil). The goal marked Egbo's team-leading fifth tally of the season.
Â
Egbo capped his evening with an assist on freshman Will Jackson's (Hudson, Ohio) goal in the 90th minute.
Â
On the season, Egbo owns team-high marks in goals (5), assists (3), points (13), shots (34) and shots on goal (16).
Â
Up next for Egbo and the Zips, Akron travels to Cleveland for their final non-conference match of the regular season at Cleveland State on Tuesday, Oct. 29. The match begins at 7 p.m. at Krenzler Field.
