MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Akron volleyball fell to Central Michigan in straight sets (25-16, 25-18, 25-13) Friday evening. The match involved the two first-place teams in the Mid-American Conference, propelling Central Michigan ahead of Akron in the standings.Â
Â
With the loss, Akron falls to 14-6 (7-2 MAC), while Central Michigan improves to 18-3 (8-1 MAC).
Â
"Hats off to Central. They fired on all cylinders on offense and defense all night. We did a few things well but weren't good enough offensively on a consistent basis to make a run at it. Our next job is to get back to playing at a high level for a full match tomorrow night" said head coach Tom Hanna.
Â
Leading the way offensively for the Zips was senior Ashley Richardson (Doylestown, Ohio) and sophomore Megan Kelly (Lakewood, Ill.) who finished the match with 10 and eight kills, respectively. Junior setter Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) dished out 25 assists while adding seven digs.Â
Â
Defensively, junior libero Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) paced the back row with 11 digs. Also contributing was junior Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio) who totaled nine digs.Â
Â
Central Michigan got out to an early lead in the first set, taking six of the first seven points. After the teams traded four consecutive side outs, the Zips began to creep back into the set, thanks to a kill by Kelly, followed by a kill by junior Shelby Fulmer (Perrysburg, Ohio).Â
Â
The Chippewas responded by taking eight of the next 10 points, propelling them to take the first set, 25-16.Â
Â
Akron had a much stronger showing early in the second set, as the score was tied 6-6 early. A four-point run by Central Michigan put it ahead, 10-6. The Zips struggled to find their groove until later in the set when they were able to string together four consecutive points, thanks to an error by CMU, followed by kills from Adleta and Kelly, as well as a block by the aforementioned duo.
Â
The Chippewas, however, were able to maintain their lead, taking the second set, 25-18.Â
Â
Akron struggled in the third set, finding itself down 7-3 early. Later in the set with the Zips down 19-11, CMU was able to put together a five-point run, propelling it to take the set, 25-13, and ultimately the match.Â
Â
Akron will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 26, as they take on Eastern Michigan at 5 p.m.
