Uljanov Upsets #7 Seed to Advance to Round of 16 at ITA Midwest Regional Women’s Tennis Championships

EAST LANSING, Mich.– Akron junior Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) upset the No. 7 seed in singles action to advance to the Round of 16 on the second day of competition at the ITA Midwest Regional Women's Tennis Championships, hosted by Michigan State, on Friday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
Uljanov defeated Eastern Michigan's Marie Mayerova, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. She will face Eastern Michigan's Rachel Papavasilopoulos in the Singles Main Draw First Round on Saturday at 10 a.m., while junior Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) takes on Notre Dame's Page Freeman.
In Friday's Main Draw Doubles action, Uljanov and sophomore Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Guadalajara, Mexico) defeated Michigan State's Dagmar Zdrubecka and Tia Mukherjee, 8-2.
Vasilescu and senior Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) also beat Valparaiso's Olivia Czerwonka and Isabella Schoolcraft, 8-2.
In the second round, Uljanov and Rosas fell to No. 7 seed Danielle Wolf and Mary Beth Hurley of Ohio State, 8-2. Vasilescu and Pedroso concluded the Zips' doubles play, falling to No. 3 seed Shiori Fukuda and Luna Dormet of Ohio State, 8-4.
"Great day today for the team," said interim head coach Brian Peters. "Anna played solid singles today, and we played consistent doubles in both rounds. Ohio State has great doubles, and we held our own well against them."
