AKRON, Ohio – The Akron track and field team returns to action this Friday, Jan. 25, as the Zips square off against rival Kent State in a dual meet at the Stile Athletics Field House starting at 7 p.m. The meet will be televised on ESPN3 with David Bacon and Jesse Squire calling the action.
UP NEXT: The 28-event meet will commence with the men's and women's pole vault beginning at 7 p.m. before the men's mile kicks off action on the track at 7:08 p.m. Tickets are $10 (cash only) and can be purchased at the door. Akron students are free with a Zip Card.
The event will be scored as a dual meet with 5-3-2-1 points being awarded for individual events with two scores per team, while relays will be scored with the winner being awarded five points and the runner-up three points.
On the men's side, the meet will feature the Zips, who were pegged to capture the 2019 Mid-American Conference Indoor Championship in the league's preseason coaches' poll, and the Golden Flashes, who were tabbed to place fourth.
In women's action, Akron and Kent State were picked first and third, respectively, in the preseason coaches' poll.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams is garnering recognition for their efforts in 2019 as the Zips are ranked 32nd and 45th, respectively, in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I Indoor Track and Field Ratings Index released on Jan. 22. Akron is the top-rated MAC school in both polls, while rating fifth and 10th, respectively, in the latest Great Lakes Regional men's and women's rankings.
THREE ZIPS' FACTS: Senior Mackenzie Andrews (Toowoomba, Australia) has run school-record times in each of her two indoor races this season (mile and 3,000 meters) and in four of her previous five indoor races overall dating back to the 2018 indoor campaign. She has set a school-record time in each of her last three races in the indoor mile. Overall, Andrews owns four school-record marks, including three (mile, 3,000 meters and distance medley relay) in the Zips' indoor record book.
Senior Matt Ludwig's (Chardon, Ohio) winning vault of 18-8.75 (5.71m) at the National Pole Vault Convention on Jan. 18 bettered a field that included two of the top-10 ranked vaulters in the World in 2018 and four of the top-10 rated United States vaulters.
The Zips own 17 automatic qualifying marks for the 2019 MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships.
ZIPS AMONG NATION'S BEST IN LATEST TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron currently has seven student-athletes ranked in the top-25 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS), including senior Matt Ludwig who is fourth in the men's pole vault (18-1.25/5.52m).
Also rated among the top-25 is Mackenzie Andrews (sixth in women's mile – 4:40.13 and seventh in women's 3,000 meters – 9:28.39), senior Jordan Latimer (Huber Heights, Ohio) (seventh in men's long jump – 25-7.25/7.80m), junior Lucy Bryan (Bristol, England) (eighth in women's pole vault – 14-1.25/4.30m), senior Eboni Hall Pickerington, Ohio) (12th in women's pole vault – 13-9.25/4.20m), senior Terrell McClain (Youngstown, Ohio) (19th in men's long jump – 24-10.50/7.58m) and senior Cole Wigal (Belpre, Ohio) (22nd in men's pole vault – 17-2.75/5.25m).

Ludwig's performance represents the second-best mark in indoor program history and established a career-best indoor effort.

Senior Dara Perry (Akron, Ohio) ran a season-best time of 8.47 to capture the women's 60-meter hurdles title and lead the Zips' efforts at the Youngstown State Invitational on Jan. 18, while freshman Victoria Abunaw (Maumee, Ohio) crossed the line in the finals in 8.86 to place fourth.
In the men's 60-meter hurdles, redshirt sophomore Patrick Kimball (Pittsburgh, Pa.) registered a time of 8.16 to finish sixth in the finals.
A YEAR AGO: Dara Perry highlighted the Zips' efforts at the annual Akron-Kent State dual meet on Jan. 19, 2017, at the Kent State Field House winning the women's 60-meter hurdles in a then school-record time of 8.42, breaking her own school mark by three one-hundredths of a second.
Garrett Crichlow took the men's mile overtaking Grzegorz Kunc down the final straightaway to cross the line first in 4:17.11, before later running down his competition over the final 30 meters to win the men's 3,000 meters in a time of 8:35.46. Junior Nick Stricklen (Lexington, Ohio) placed third in men's mile in 4:21.39.
Jackie Siefring took top honors in the women's long jump soaring 19-11.75 (6.09m).

Placing second and third in the men's 60-meter hurdles with personal-best times of 8.25 and 8.33 was Patrick Kimball and junior Dylan Hochbein (Sarver, Pa.).

Senior Olivia Snyder (Navarre, Ohio) and redshirt sophomore Emily Taylor (Mount Perry, Ohio) finished second and third in the women's weight throw with marks of 56-10 (17.32m) and 52-3.25 (15.93m), respectively.
Senior Abigale Wilson (Carrollton, Ohio) and Snyder placed second and third in the women's shot put with marks of 46-1.50 (14.06m) and 46-1.25 (14.05m).
Sophomore Lindsey Scarton (Berea, Ohio) finished second in the women's 3,000 meters with a career-best time of 10:33.56.
In the men's weight throw, senior Maurice Harris (Toledo, Ohio) finished second with a mark of 62-7.25 (19.08m).
Taking third in the men's triple jump with a jump of 47-0.25 (14.33) was junior Marcques Gibbs (Darby, Pa.).
AKRON DUO EARNS MAC ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS: University of Akron track and field seniors Mackenzie Andrews and Matt Ludwig were recognized by the Mid-American Conference as its Track and Field Athletes of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday, Jan. 23.
For the second consecutive week, Andrews and Ludwig were tabbed the Women's Track and Men's Field Athletes of the Week.
