AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron Men's golf team opens its 2018-19 campaign with The Invitational at The Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, S.C. hosted by the College of Charleston on Sunday thru Tuesday, Sept. 9-11.
"It feels like last season just ended, and we are looking forward to getting this season underway," Zips head coach David Trainor said. "We are kicking our season off at one of my favorite places, and one of the most demanding golf courses in the world. The field is very good, and we have prepared well. Now it's time to play."
The Zips are one of 14 teams competing at the 54-hole tournament joined by Charleston (host), Charleston Southern, Elon, Francis Marion, George Mason, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, High Point, James Madison, Maryland, Ole Miss, Southern Methodist and Western Carolina.
The Zips return five letterwinners, including the squad's low-stroke leader from a year ago in senior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) along with senior Jacob Morgan (Lafayette, Ga.). Other returning members for Akron include junior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio), sophomore Fabian Sunden (Sweden), redshirt freshmen Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio) and Kaleb Smith (Mansfield, Ohio). The Zips added two newcomers for the 2018-19 season in freshmen Cade Kreps (Boardman, Ohio) and Ignacio Puente (Seville, Spain).
After a tough week of qualifying, the Zips starting five was set. The lineup consists of three returners and two newcomers. The returners participating include Grayson, McFarland, and Sunden, while making their collegiate debuts are Puente and Bayerl.
Opening round action begins at 11:00 a.m. with tee times from holes No. 1 and 10 at the par-72, 7,324-yard Ocean Course. Monday's 18-hole round will also utilize tee times off holes No. 1 and 10 from 8 to 10:20 a.m., while Tuesday's final round action is scheduled for an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
Grayson is the lone Zip with playing experience at The Invitational at the Ocean Course. In 2015-16 when he was a freshman, Grayson fired a 77-73-79 – 229 (+13) tournament total. He finished tied for 36th overall while Akron placed 9th overall in the team rankings with 289-301-309 – 903 (+39) scores.

TOURNAMENT NOTES
The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort has played host to the 2007 Senior PGA and 2012 PGA Championships. It will also host the 2021 PGA Championship. The Ocean Course is only the fourth course to host each of the PGA of America's major championships. Probably no other golf course in the world outside of the United Kingdom and Ireland is affected as much by the wind. Located on the eastern-most end of Kiawah Island, The Ocean Course has more seaside holes than any other course in the Northern Hemisphere. Middle Tennessee State shot a three-round 850 (-14) to claim the 2016 tournament title, while Ole Miss was runner-up (-8), Maryland third (-5) and Georgia Southern fourth (-4). Last year's tournament was cancelled due to Hurricane Irma.
