AKRON, Ohio – Members of the University of Akron women's tennis team will be competing in different tournaments this weekend.
Â
Redshirt senior Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) has been invited to play in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Pre-qualifying rounds begin on Saturday, Sept. 29, with qualifying singles set for Oct. 2-3. The main draw is slated for Oct. 4-7.
Â
"We haven't had a player qualify for the All-American Championships since Zara Harutyunyan (2009-12) and Prang Pantusart (2010-13), so this is exciting for the program," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "I know Sophia is really looking forward to the opportunity to play against the best players in collegiate tennis.  She deserves this opportunity, and I know she is motivated to perform at a high level."
Â
Senior Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexico) and freshman Alexis Steer (Powell, Ohio) will represent Akron at the Detroit Mercy Invitational on Sept. 28-29. Â Action begins each day at 9 a.m. at the Titan Tennis Courts.
Â
"The opportunity to travel with only two players is actually quite beneficial to both the coach and the players," Padgett added. "You are able to spend a greater amount of time on court coaching and working through mechanics, mental toughness, and match play strategy.  This will be my first time on court with Lexi, and I'm excited to work with her. Carla is a senior and can provide Lexi with the guidance and advice that is so valuable to a freshman."
Â
Last weekend in the Akron Invitational, Geier went 3-0 in singles play en route to Zips' Summa Health Student-Athlete of the Week and MAC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors. Flores played one singles match and fell, but captured a doubles win with freshman partner Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Gaudalajara, Mexico). Steer will make her collegiate debut this weekend.
