Women’s Tennis Beats Youngstown State in Singles on Day 2 of Shootout

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team claimed a 4-1 singles win over Youngstown State on the second day of action at its own Akron Shootout.
At No. 1 singles, redshirt senior captain Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) beat Imaan Hassim, 6-1, 6-2. At No. 2, freshman Ceci Rosas (Gaudalajara, Mexico) won her first collegiate match with a 7-6 (7), 6-1 victory over Anastasia Khokhlova. At No. 3, Sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) defeated Tamara Teufl, 7-6 (4), 7-5. At No. 4, junior captain Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) beat Anastasia Khokhlova in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1.
"Today has marked another strong day for us at our home opener," said Akron assistant coach Shannon Newnes. "I have been more than impressed with the effort and attitude that has been shown so far this weekend. In singles we have been consistently strong and in the doubles we have two new combinations that we have tried this weekend, and I am very happy with how in the two days there has been vast improvements in both singles and doubles."
The Zips also fell to Louisville in doubles action, 2-1. The lone UA win came at No. 3 as senior Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) and Rosas defeated Anna Collins and Dina Chaika, 7-6 (2).
"I have seen a lot of growth in terms of some of the returning players at such an early point in the season as well as a high level of maturity in some of our new freshmen whom have started very strongly in their collegiate careers. Tomorrow marks the final day of the invitational in which I hope we can finish strong and end the weekend positively."
Shootout action concludes on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 9 a.m. at the UA outdoor tennis courts on campus. If forced indoors, matches will be played at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.
