Akron Falls to Miami, 3-0, in MAC Opener

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron volleyball team dropped its first Mid-American Conference match of the season to Miami, 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-18), on Friday night at James A. Rhodes Arena.
The Zips fell to 8-4 overall and 0-1 in MAC play, while the RedHawks improved to 9-4, 1-0 MAC.
A pair of middle blockers in junior Ashley Richardson (Doylestown, Ohio) and freshman Hannah Yaconis (Batavia, Ill.) led with six kills, each. Left side hitter Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio) and freshman Megan Kelly (Lakewood, Ill.) both added four kills on the night. Sophomore setter Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) paced the Zips with 15 set assists. Defensive specialists Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) and Abbey Pawlak (Sylvania, Ohio) as well as setter Taylor Kuruzovich (Port Matilda, Pa.) all recorded a service ace for Akron.
Defensively, senior Kayla Gwozdz (Temperance, Mich.) led with 10 digs, while Weigand and Pawlak added eight. Richardson recorded two blocks and freshman Teagan Ochaya (Mentor, Ohio) added one.
Akron recorded a .097 hitting percentage on the night, compared to Miami with .188.
The Zips got off to an early 6-3 advantage to start the match, highlighted by a kill from Adleta and a service ace by Pawlak. A 6-1 run would give Miami a two-point edge over Akron. The RedHawks would only to continue to build on its lead, taking set one, 25-15.
Miami carried its momentum into set two as it led by as many as nine midways through the set. A late 4-0 run that saw kills from Kelly and Ochaya set the Zips within three points of Miami. However, the RedHawks would answer with a 4-0 run of their own to seal a second set win, 25-19.
Miami held a 7-5 advantage to start out the third set. A 4-0 run by Akron, which included a kill from Adleta and a service ace by Sharrits, gave the Zips a 9-7 lead. The RedHawks responded with seven unanswered points to regain their lead. Akron was able to capitalize on a few Miami errors, only trailing 16-14. Miami would hold onto its lead for the remainder of the set, capping off the match with a 25-18 third set victory.
Akron continues its homestand against Bowling Green on Saturday at James A. Rhodes Arena in a 5 p.m. contest.
