Women’s Tennis Opens Season With Akron Shootout This Weekend

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team opens the 2018-19 season this weekend by hosting its own Akron Shootout.
Action begins on Friday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m. Participating this fall are Cleveland State, Louisville, Youngstown State, and host Akron. The complete schedule is listed below. Weather permitting, matches will be held at the UA outdoor tennis courts on campus (Wheeler Street). If forced indoors, matches will be played at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.
"It is great to finally get on court in a real match play environment," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "I know the team is looking forward to it, as is the coaching staff. We have a couple of new players that will see action this weekend for the first time, which is always exciting. It should be an excellent tournament to test us immediately."
Akron finished the 2017-18 season with a 14-12 overall. The Zips return redshirt senior Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany), who won 2017 MAC Player of the Year honors; senior Luisa Echeverry (Cali Colombia), and senior Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexico); junior Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal); and sophomores Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany), Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany), and Madison Wolfe (Monument, Colo.).
UA also welcomes four newcomers in the fall– freshmen Enya Forgaci (Boca Raton, Fla.), Holland Long (Rochester, N.Y.), Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Gaudalajara, Mexico), and Alexis Steer (Powell, Ohio).
The Zips' captains are Sophia Geier and Rita Pedroso.
