Women’s Tennis Wins Doubles on Day 1 of Shootout

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team opened the 2018-19 season with a 2-1 doubles win over Cleveland State on the first day of action at its own Akron Shootout.
Sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) and junior Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) claimed a 7-5 win over Isabella Spindler and Kate Avram at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, redshirt senior captain Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) paired up with freshman Holland Long (Rochester, N.Y.) for her collegiate debut. The duo won 6-2 over Klara Mrcela and Lara Prosenjak.
The Zips also tied Louisville in singles action, 3-3. At No. 2 singles, Geier defeated Maya Smith, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 5, Long battled Dina Chaika to a 6-1, 7-6 (5) victory. At No. 6, senior Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) beat Anna Collins, 6-0, 6-1.
"Today was a pretty good day for us overall," said Akron head coach Brandon Padgett. "I'm disappointed that the courts somehow got mixed up in singles, so we had players playing out of position, but match play is the most important thing right now for everyone. Holland had a great start to her collegiate career, winning in both singles and doubles, which I was excited to see. I'm looking forward to seeing how the team progresses throughout the rest of the weekend."
Shootout action continues on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 10 a.m. at the UA outdoor tennis courts on campus. If forced indoors, matches will be played at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.
