TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – University of Akron redshirt junior Mackenzie Andrews (Toowoomba, Australia) and sophomore Andre Bollam-Godbott (Brunswick, Ohio) directed the efforts of the Zips' women's and men's cross country teams at the John McNichols Invitational hosted by Indiana State on Saturday, Sept. 15, registering team-leading times of 18:24.1 and 25:51 to place 10th and 20th, respectively, in the big-school division.
As a team, the Akron women tied for fourth, while the men's squad placed fifth.
Bollam-Godbott was followed closely across the line for Akron by junior Marc Migliozzi (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who traversed the men's 8K course in 25:57 to place 21st.
Completing the Zips' scoring efforts with times of 26:35 (40th), 26:38 (41st) and 26:52 (48th), respectively, was freshman Jake Wickert (Medina, Ohio), junior Nick Stricklen (Lexington, Ohio) and redshirt freshman Taylor Hopkins (Heath, Ohio).
Additionally, redshirt sophomore Jacob Ondash (Hiram, Ohio) and redshirt junior Nick Campbell (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) garnered times of 26:59 (54th) and 29:24 (91st).
"The team started out well through two miles and then the top group and our top-two guys pulled away from the other four," Akron men's head cross country coach Lee LaBadie commented. "We definitely need to compete better in the middle of the race as we got strung out and finished fifth. The times today were on the slow side for everyone as the course ran slow. We'll be ready in two weeks as we host the All-Ohio Championships."
Andrews was Akron's top women's finisher for the second consecutive race and was followed across the line in the 5K field by senior Ashley Murray (Seville, Ohio), who registered a time of 18:40.8 to place 17th.
Sophomores Alyssa Thomas (Green, Ohio) and Lindsey Scarton (Berea, Ohio) along with junior Haley Hess (Curtice, Ohio) capped the Zips' scoring performances posting times of 18:53.9 (24th), 19:00.3 (33rd) and 19:18.4 (42nd), respectively.
Freshmen Sydney Niekamp (Napoleon, Ohio) and Lizzy Gurko (Northfield, Ohio) rounded out the women's efforts for Akron earning times of 19:36.7 (53rd) and 19:50.0 (57th).
"We had a great competitive effort today," said Akron women's head cross country coach Trey Brokaw. "Their experience on the course this weekend will serve them well when we return for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in November. Mackenzie (Andrews) led the women's team again today as she continues to impress me with her ability to train and race at a high level. With another two weeks of training until we host the All-Ohio Championships, I fully expect Mac being in the mix for the individual title. Ashley (Murray) and Alyssa (Thomas) both had great individual performances. They looked very strong on a tough course today and they will be a huge part of this team's success this season."
The Zips will return to competition hosting the All-Ohio Cross Country Championships on Sept. 29 at Silver Creek Metro Park in Norton, Ohio.
