Quinn Named to Akron Track and Field Coaching Staff

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell has named Alan Quinn as the Zips' men's and women's sprints coach. His hiring is pending approval by the University's Board of Trustees.

"We are excited to have Alan a part of our program," Mitchell commented. "We have an excellent group of sprinters and hurdlers, including an outstanding incoming class in those events. He brings a wealth of experience and expertise needed to move this group to the next level."

A 2006 graduate of Langston University, Quinn joins the Zips' staff after spending the past three seasons as an assistant coach with the Campbell Track and Field program, working primarily with the hurdlers, sprinters and relay teams.Â
While at Campbell, Quinn coached 24 Big South Conference Champions and 90 All-Big South Conference honorees and eight NCAA Regional Qualifiers. Eight Campbell track and field records have fell under the purview of Quinn, including the indoor women's 400m (Lynette Akai), 60-meter hurdles (Lilla Juhasz) and 4x400m relay and the men's 60 meters (Khai McLin);Â outdoor women's 100-meter hurdles (Lilla Juhasz), 400-meter hurdles (Tatiana Wolfe), men's 100 meters (Kahi McLin), 4x100m relay. Juhasz also holds the Big South Conference record in the 100-meter hurdles.Â
Quinn coached Campbell's sprinters and hurdlers to national and conference recognition during his tenure. Seven athletes and one relay qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds across the three seasons. Juhasz made three straight appearances at the meet in the 100-meter hurdles from 2015-17.
Quinn's athletes picked up 12 Big South Conference weekly honors during his tenure at Campbell. Juhasz was named the 2016 Big South Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, while Janai Scott was named the 2017 Most Outstanding Women's Track Performer and Freshman of the Year. Khai McLin was named 2016 Freshman of the Year.
During his second full season at Campbell in 2017, Quinn's athletes collected seven Big South Conference titles and 12 all-conference honors. Juhasz closed out her Camel career with Big South championships in the 60- and 100-meter hurdles. Scott made a splash in the conference during her freshman season, winning the indoor 200m and capping it off with titles in the 100m and 200m at the outdoor championships. In addition, the men's and women's 4x400m relays went all-conference indoor and outdoor, while the men's 4x100m relay won the outdoor title and the women earned all-conference honors.
In 2016, the sprinters and hurdlers made substantial improvements at the conference championships, winning five more titles than the previous season. At the Big South Indoor Championships, Juhasz won titles in the 60 meters and 60-meter hurdles, while Tashinga Chitambira (100m), Juhasz (100m hurdles), Khai McLin (200m), Tatiana Wolfe (400m Hurdles) and the men's 4x100m relay won titles at the outdoor championships. In addition, Campbell collected nine all-conference honors during the 2016 season. Kahi became the first Campbell athlete to qualify for the USATF Junior National Championships (100m, 200m). He finished his Freshman year ranked 38th in the world for U20 in the 200 meters
Quinn had an immediate impact on the success of the sprinters and hurdlers in 2015. At the indoor championships, Chitambira won the 60m title and Juhasz (60m hurdles), Lynette Akai (400m) and the women's 4x400m relay team won all-conference accolades just weeks after he arrived in the Creek. At the 2016 Big South Outdoor Championships, Quinn's athletes collected one conference title by Lynette Akai (400m) and four all-conference honors.
Quinn joined the Fighting Camels coaching staff after serving as a volunteer assistant coach at Texas Tech in 2014. He aided associate head coach Dion Miller with the development of the sprinters, hurdlers and relay teams. During his time with the Red Raiders, the men captured the Big 12 outdoor title. Texas Tech sprinters and hurdlers brought home eight All-America honors between the indoor and outdoor seasons. 13 individual Red Raiders and four Red Raider relays qualified for the NCAA West Regionals.Â
Quinn also had stints at Shorter University and Langston University prior to arriving in Lubbock, Texas. At Shorter, Quinn coached 14 All-Americans, four Peach Belt Conference champions and his athletes set four Peach Belt Conference records. The program captured the NCCAA Women's Indoor Championship and was the runner-up in the Outdoor Championships during his tenure.
At Langston University, Quinn mentored five individual NAIA national champions, a national championship relay team, 33 All-Americans, 55 conference champions and eight Red River Conference Championship meet records. In addition, Quinn's athletes set 24 school records during his tenure.Â
