Brokaw Named to Akron Track and Field Coaching Staff

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell has named Trey Brokaw as the Zips' women's distance and cross country coach. His hiring is pending approval by the University's Board of Trustees.

"We are fortunate to have Trey join our staff," Mitchell commented. "He brings with him a strong ability to recruit, he has gained valuable experience working with a traditionally great program, and the understanding of what it takes to move our women's distance program to the next level."

"Their consistent success in the Mid-American Conference, NCAA Championships and Olympics were what initially attracted me to the University of Akron. Coach Mitchell's work ethic, vision and dedication to student-athlete success was apparent from the first time I met him. A 2013 graduate of Emporia State, Brokaw comes to Akron after serving last season as a recruiting assistant for the track and field program at the University of Nebraska.

Brokaw helped solidify one of the strongest early-signing classes in program history in 2017 with 15 athletes from three different continents. Through his experience recruiting on the international level, Brokaw spearheaded efforts to attract world-class talent to Lincoln, including Estonian 400-meter national record holder Tony Nõu (46.24), Danish middle distance runner Mia Mørck (2:05 800 meters) and South African prodigy George Kusche (1:47 800 meters and 3:41 1,500 meters).

Before starting at Nebraska, Brokaw spent months traveling the world attending international track and field competitions. In the summer of 2017 he attended two competitions in Germany, the U18 World Championships in Kenya, and the U20 European Championships in Italy. Brokaw also spent extensive time in those countries connecting with coaches and educating athletes and their families on opportunities to study in the United States.

From 2013-16, Brokaw was an assistant coach, recruiting coordinator and director of operations for the University of Northern Iowa. His primary coaching responsibilities included working with the long sprints, middle distance and distance events. His athletes amassed 23 All-Missouri Valley Conference performances, seven Missouri Valley Conference titles, and eight school records - including the 1,000 meters, 1,500 meters, mile, 3,000 meters, 3,000-meter steeplechase, 5,000 meters, distance medley relay and 4x800-meter relay.

Brokaw's athletes excelled on the biggest stages in collegiate track and field. He coached seven NCAA Division I national qualifiers in the 400 meters, 800 meters and 1,500 meters. He also coached the 2016 Drake Relays Champion and a 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

From his early success recruiting and coaching, Brokaw was selected to attend the Emerging Elite Coaches Camp. This camp is designed for new, promising college cross country and track and field coaches around the world. What is considered to be one of the premier coaching education camps in the country, this week-long event is held at the Olympic Training Center in southern California and doubles as a USATF Level 1 certification course.

Before arriving at Northern Iowa, Brokaw started his coaching career in 2012 as an assistant for his alma mater, Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas.

As an athlete at Emporia State from 2009-12, Brokaw was team captain and part of the squad that placed fifth at the Division II Indoor National Championships in 2011. That team followed up their fifth-place finish indoors with a fourth-place finish at the Division II Outdoor National Championships.
