HEAD COACH TOM HANNA POSTGAME COMMENTS
AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron volleyball team fell to Cleveland State University in a close 3-2 exhibition match (27-25, 26-28, 20-25, 25-19, 10-15) on Friday evening at James A. Rhodes Arena.
The Zips were led by a pair of double-doubles from sophomores Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) with 21 assists and 15 digs, and Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) with 12 assists and a team-best of 23 digs. Senior Kayla Gwozdz (Temperance, Mich.) and sophomore Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio) led the offensive efforts on the evening with 12 kills each. Senior Abbey Pawlak (Sylvania, Ohio) added 10 digs for the Zips.
Trinnity Hall led the way for Cleveland State with 14 kills, while Emily DeGeorge posted 17 digs.
As a team, Akron played well defensively with a total of 87 digs on the night. Offensively, the Zips completed the match with a .193 hitting percentage, compared to Vikings with .200.
Akron will open up its 2018 season at the Fullerton/Riverside Classic. The Zips will take on Cal State Fullerton Friday, Aug. 24 at 2 p.m. in Fullerton, Calif. to begin the tournament.
