Men’s Golf Fall Schedule of Events Released
July 26 | Men's Golf
AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips men's golf team have five tournaments during the fall season, highlighted by the Zips' Firestone Invitational at the world-famous Firestone Country Club, eighth-year head coach David Trainor announced Thursday.
"We are excited for this year's schedule," Trainor said. "In past years, we play against some of the best teams in the country on really good courses. In the fall there are so many great events, and it is always my goal to play in the best tournaments on the best courses against the best possible competition. I believe this schedule accomplishes this objective. The Invitational at The Ocean Course will be here quick, and we have some work to do before for that opening tournament. I look forward to start preparing the team for competition over the next few weeks!"
The Zips open the 2018-19 campaign at Kiawah Island, S.C. on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 10-11 as the College of Charleston Hosts The Invitational at the Ocean Course.
Two weeks later on Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 24-25, Akron will be back in action at the BearCat Invitational hosted by The University of Cincinnati at Coldstream Golf Course.
Next, the Zips play host at their annual Firestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club's North Course in Akron, Ohio. UA's tournament is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 1-2.
The following week, Akron travels to Pete Dye Golf Course in Bridgeport, W.Va. for the Mountaineer Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 8-9, hosted by West Virginia University.
The Zips final destination of the fall is a three-day event at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate hosted by Old Dominion University at Kilmarlic Country Club in Outer Banks, N.C. on Sunday-Tuesday, Oct. 21-23.
The Zips return six letterwinners, including the squad's low-stroke leader from a year ago in senior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) along with seniors Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio) and Jacob Morgan (Lafayette, Ga.).
Other returning members or Akron include junior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio), sophomore Fabian Sunden (Sweden), and redshirt freshmen Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio) and Kaleb Smith (Mansfield, Ohio)
Akron added two newcomers for the 2018-19 season in freshmen Cade Kreps (Boardman, Ohio) and Ignacio Puente (Seville, Spain).
