NORMAN, Okla. – For the fourth straight year, a pair of Akron men's golfers were named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars as senior George Baylis (Ascot, England) and junior Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio) earned the prestigious honors, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced on Wednesday.
Â
"I am extremely proud of George and Jacob," Zips' eighth-year head coach David Trainor said. "They worked very hard this year, and this honor is a culmination of their hard work, both in the classroom and on the course. I can't thank the both of them enough for their hard work and how they represented themselves and Akron Zips men's golf program."
The duo marks the 14th and 15th recipients of this award in Akron's program history and 10th under Trainor in seven seasons. In addition, Baylis and Appleby each collected Mid-American Conference All-Academic awards in 2017-18.
Â
Baylis made his second appearance as an All-America Scholar honoree and graduated in May with a psychology degree. He made one appearance on the Dean's List and finished with an overall 3.332 GPA while leading the Zips' men's golf team.
Â
Baylis posted Akron's second-best stroke average at 73.55 strokes per outing after competing in all 11 of the Zips' events. Baylis led Akron's scoring five times this season while turning-in six Top 25 finishes, including a season's best 3-under par 213 tournament total at the Mountaineer Intercollegiate, tying for third overall. Baylis fired nine rounds of par or better throughout the 2017-18 campaign and tied for fifth overall at the MAC Championships with a 299 (+11) effort. He was named to the 2018 MAC Championships All-Tournament team.
Â
Appleby makes his first appearance as an All-America Scholar as a public relations major. He maintained a 3.594 overall GPA with one appearance on the Dean's List.
Â
Appleby played in 10-of-11 events this season for the Zips. He ranked third in team scoring with a 75.58 stroke average while posting three rounds of par or better. Appleby carded an individual season-low 218 (+5) 54-hole total. Appleby finished tied for 25th overall at the MAC Championships.
Â
A total of 265 Division I men's golfers received the honor. To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50 percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
Â
In addition to the individual awards, the team earned GCAA 18Birdies Team All-Academic status for the 10th consecutive year, and seventh under Trainor for achieving a 3.37 team GPA during the 2017-18 academic year. Â
