Baylis, Appleby, McFarland Earn Academic All-MAC Honors for Men’s Golf

Cleveland, Ohio – The Akron Zips men's golf team placed three golfers on the Mid-American Conference All-Academic team as senior George Baylis (Ascot, England), junior Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio), and sophomore Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio) earned Academic All-MAC honors, the league announced Friday.
"Our entire team works hard in the classroom. And, to be great in the classroom and on the golf course is simply fantastic," Zips' head coach David Trainor said. "George, Jacob, and Mitchell have done extremely well in the classroom, and they are commended for their hard work. I am extremely proud of them and their efforts."
A total of 28 student-athletes were named to this year's All-MAC squad as Baylis collected the award for the third time, Appleby claimed his second, and McFarland makes his first appearance.
Baylis, a psychology major, also makes his third appearance as an Academic All-MAC honoree. He made one appearance on the Dean's List and maintains a 3.332 GPA while leading the Zips' men's golf team.
Baylis posted Akron's second-best stroke average at 73.55 strokes per outing after competing in all 11 of the Zips' events. Baylis led Akron's scoring five times this season while turning-in six Top 25 finishes, including a season's best 3-under par 213 tournament total at the Mountaineer Intercollegiate, tying for third overall. Baylis fired nine rounds of par or better throughout the 2017-18 campaign and tied for fifth overall at the MAC Championships with a 299 (+11) effort. He was named to the 2018 MAC Championships All-Tournament team.
Appleby earned his second-career Academic All-MAC award as a public relations major. He maintained a makes his first appearance on the all-academic squad with a 3.594 overall GPA and one appearance on the Dean's List.
Appleby played in 10-of-11 events this season for the Zips. He ranked third in team scoring with a 75.58 stroke average while posting three rounds of par or better. Appleby carded an individual season-low 218 (+5) 54-hole total. Appleby finished tied for 25th overall at the MAC Championships.
Rounding out the Academic All-MAC selections was McFarland. He makes his first appearance as a top academic performer with a 3.880 GPA in political science.
On the course, McFarland played in 10-of-11 events this season. He finished fifth in team scoring with a 76.53 stroke average. McFarland posted three rounds of par or better, including a career-low 69 (-2) performance at the BearCat Invitational. In his first MAC Championship appearance, McFarland finished ninth overall with a 302 (+14) 72-hole total. After 54-holes of play at the MAC Championships, McFarland led the Zips' scoring and was tied for second overall.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
