AKRON, Ohio – In the final regular-season match, the University of Akron women's tennis team will host Ball State in Mid-American Conference action on Sunday, April 22, at 1 p.m.
The Zips (14-11 overall, 3-4 MAC) will face the Cardinals (10-9 overall, 2-4 MAC), who visit Buffalo prior to taking on Akron, at the UA outdoor courts.
The two Zips' seniors– team captain Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas) and Waverly Wituski (Springboro, Ohio)– will be honored prior to the match.
"It's been a great season of development, and this team has seen excellent progress," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "We have put ourselves in position to make the conference tournament with a win this Sunday, which would allow for even further development for this young group. We know that any of the six teams that make the tournament will have a
legitimate chance at winning it, so we need to have every player step up and play at the level they are all capable of playing. Ball State has excellent depth, and they have the ability to beat any team on any day, so we will have to play our best tennis to get the win."
In all-time series, Ball State leads Akron, 21-7. Last season, Akron went undefeated throughout MAC play until the season finale, a 4-3 loss at BSU. The Cardinals are hosting the 2018 MAC Women's Tennis Championship on April 27-29. Only the top six teams advance to MAC tourney play.
Last week, Akron fell to defending MAC champion Buffalo, 6-1.
Freshman Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) is 16-5 in singles action this spring, playing at the No. 1 and 2 spots. Junior Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) stands 13-10 in singles action. Junior Carla Flores (Caohuila, Mexico) is 8-3 at No. 6 singles this spring.
At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and freshman Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) are 8-6 at the position this spring. At No. 2 doubles, Knezevich and Vasilescu are 2-0 in MAC action. At No. 3 doubles, Echeverry and Wituski are 4-3 (2-1 in MAC) in spring action.
