Greenville, S.C. – The Akron men's golf team entered a 305 (+17) first round score at the 49th annual Furman Intercollegiate, ranking 16th overall on the team leaderboard on Friday afternoon.

Junior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) and senior George Baylis (Ascot, England) led the Zips' scoring at the 54-hole event at Furman University Golf Course, a par 72 course that spans 7,031 yards. Grayson carded six pars and five birdies en route to a 74 (+2) score, while Baylis recorded eight pars and four birdies for 76 (+4) tally.

Grayson recorded three birdies during the first nine holes, finishing with a 1-under par 35 total. On the back, he collected two more birdies, but carded 5-of-7 bogeys for a 39 (+3) showing. Baylis was 2-over par on both sides of the course with two birdies on each side. In addition, Baylis added four bogeys and two double bogeys to his 18-hole total. Grayson is currently tied for 41st on the leaderboard while Baylis is tied at 61st.

Following in scoring for Akron were junior Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio), sophomore Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio), and freshman Fabian Sunden (Sweden).

Appleby moved to 1-under par after two holes of play but hit a rough patch with a double bogey and bogey for a 2-over score after four holes. On hole No. 6, Appleby evened his scorecard with an eagle on the 483-yard, par-5 hole. He finished the front-9 2-over and added a 3-over effort on the back, collecting six consecutive par scores for a 77 (+5) total. Appleby is tied for 69th place.

McFarland and Sunden added a pair of 78 (+6) scores to the Zips' total. McFarland collected seven pars and four birdies, while Sunden had eight pars and three birdies.

North Florida leads the 21-team field with a 10-under, 278-stroke team performance, as the Ospreys' Phillip Knowles topped the individual leaderboard with a 3-under par 66 first-round effort.
Play is scheduled to resume on Saturday with tee times ranging from 8:30 a.m. to 10:10 a.m. for the morning wave and 12:40 a.m. to 2:10 p.m. for the afternoon participants. Akron is scheduled to tee-off on hole No. 10 beginning with McFarland at 9:20 a.m. The rest of the Zips will follow in 10-minute increments with Sunden (9:30), Appleby (9:40), Baylis (9:50), and Grayson (10:00).
