Zips to Open Outdoor Campaign at Roadrunner Invitational

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron track and field teams will open their spring campaign this weekend as the Zips travel to San Antonio, Texas, to compete in the Roadrunner Invitational hosted by UTSA (University of Texas at San Antonio) on Friday and Saturday, March 23-24.
UP NEXT: The Zips will go against an eight-team field which includes; Akron, Baylor, Kansas State, TCU, Texas A&M, Texas State, Stephen F. Austin and UTSA.
The meet will begin with the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon at 1 p.m. ET and 1:30 p.m. ET, respectively, on Thursday, March 22. Competition on the track commences on Friday, March 23, with the women's hammer at 2 p.m. ET. Final-day action begins on Saturday, March 24, with the women's high jump, men's pole vault, women's long jump, men's long jump and women's discus at 12 p.m. ET. Events on the track will kick off with the men's 2K steeplechase at 3 p.m. ET.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams garnered recognition for their efforts during the indoor season as the Zips' women's squad ranked 32nd and the men 42nd, respectively, in the final 2018 United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I Indoor Track and Field National Team Computer Rankings released on March 10.
The Zips' men's and women's squads were the highest-rated teams in the Mid-American Conference, while the men's and women's squads are ranked No. 20 and No. 25, respectively, in the final Collegiate Indoor Dual Meet Rankings as compiled by Jesse Squire for Track and Field News. The Akron women and men also ranked seventh and eighth, respectively, in the Great Lakes Regional polls.
ZIPS AMONG NATION'S BEST IN PRESEASON TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron currently has eight student-athletes ranked nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) in the preseason computer ratings, including junior Matt Ludwig (Chardon, Ohio), who is second in the men's pole vault (18-8.25/5.70m).
Also rated is senior Jackie Siefring (Covington, Ohio) (ninth in women's heptathlon – 5.750; 12th in 400-meter hurdles – 57.61; 43rd in women's long jump – 20-5.25/6.23m), senior Terrell McClain (Youngstown, Ohio) (12th in the men's long jump – 26-1/7.95m), juniors Curtis Richardson (Blacklick, Ohio) and Cody Stine (Shelby, Ohio) (23rd in the men's high jump – 7-1.50/2.17m), redshirt junior Jordan Latimer (Huber Heights, Ohio) (24th in the men's long jump – 25-7.50/7.81m), senior Rebecca Pietsch (Dusseldorf, Germany) (32nd in women's pole vault – 13-6.50/4.13m) and junior Rodrigo Iglesias (Logrono, Spain) (46th in the men's javelin – 221-10/67.62m).
A YEAR AGO: The University of Akron track and field team earned six victories as part of 31 overall top-five weekend efforts to round out the Zips' performances at the Roadrunners Invitational hosted by the University of Texas at San Antonio on March 25, 2017.
Matt Ludwig eclipsed 17-8.50 (5.40m), the then third-best jump in program history, to finish first in the men's pole vault.
Phil Jagers unleashed a throw of 203-6 (62.04m) to claim the triumph in the men's discus, while posting a mark of 172-4 (52.52m) to place third was senior Maurice Harris (Toledo, Ohio).
The Zips took the top-four finishes in the women's long jump led by a winning mark of 19-9.50 (6.03m) from Daniella Johnson.
Curtis Richardson captured the title in the men's high jump surpassing 7-0.25 (2.14m).
Terrell McClain won the men's long jump with a leap of 25-6.25 (7.78m).
Taking home the title in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.71 was junior Dara Perry (Akron, Ohio).
As a team, the Zips' men's squad placed third among seven teams with 114 points, finishing 2017 NCAA Indoor Champion Texas A&M (231 points) and host UTSA (147.50). In the women's race, Akron placed third with 116 points, behind only Texas A&M (264 points) and Baylor (145).
