AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team begins a four-match home stand this week with two non-conference matches on Friday, Feb. 9.
Â
UA hosts SEC powerhouse Tennessee at 3 p.m., followed by local rival Walsh at 6 p.m. Both matches will be held at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow. Pizza will be provided to fans during the Tennessee match.Â
Â
The Lady Vols rank among the Top 30 women's teams in the country, receiving votes in the latest NCAA Division I poll.
Â
"It's great that we are able to host a team the caliber of Tennessee," said eighth-year head coach Brandon Padgett. Â "I appreciate (coach) Alison (Ojeda) keeping us on the schedule after she took over for Mike (retired). Â UT will likely be the strongest team we play, as they currently sit just outside the Top 25 in the national rankings. Â They were a Top 20 team consistently last year, and I'm excited for our team to compete against another high-quality team, as we get closer to conference play."
Â
"Playing a second match against a very solid Walsh team will certainly test our players, but we need to be able to be as mentally and physically strong as we can be, moving forward."
Â
Last week, the Zips (4-3 overall) split a pair of matches, beating out Utah State before falling to Michigan State.
Â
Freshman Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany), who moved up to the No. 2 singles position, remains undefeated in singles play. She stands a perfect 6-0 in singles action.
Â
Vasilescu is also undefeated (4-0) in doubles action with partner junior Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia). Junior Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexica) and sophomore Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) are 2-0 at No. 3 doubles action this spring.
