EAST LANSING, Mich. – The University of Akron women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision at Michigan State at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility on Sunday afternoon.

UA dropped the doubles point to the Spartans (7-1 overall).

"Doubles was better today, but we still have work to do," said Akron head coach Brandon Padgett. "Our new combinations show promise."

The Zips (4-3 overall) claimed one singles victory.

Freshman Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) moved up to the No. 2 singles spot and easily defeated Habiba Shaker, 7-6 (4), 6-2. Vasilescu remains unbeaten (6-0 this spring) in singles play.

"In singles, we played hard with effort on every court against a quality opponent," Padgett said. "It was great to see Miruna pick up a great win against an opponent whom is a senior and has a wealth of match play experience. We have had four years of play against her and have not been able to pick up a win against her until today."

The Zips return home for two matches on Friday, Feb. 9. UA hosts Tennessee at 3 p.m. and Walsh at 6 p.m. Both matches will be held at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.
