Siefring's Record-Setting Night Leads Zips on Day Two of Akron Invitational

AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron senior Jackie Siefring (Covington, Ohio) established a school and facility record in the women's pentathlon en route to capturing the title with a five-event cumulative score of 4,308 in second-day action at the 14th Annual Akron Invitational on Friday, Feb. 2, at the Stile Athletics Field House.
The title marked the third consecutive year in which Siefring has won the event at the Akron Invitational. In the process, she posted the second-highest score in the country this season.
Siefring and senior Patricia Ortega (Logrono, Spain) finished first and second, respectively, in the women's pentathlon, recording cumulative five-event scores of 4,308 and 4,008, the top-two marks in the Mid-American Conference this season.
Both opened their evenings turning in career-best times in the 60-meter hurdles as Ortega and Siefring crossed the line in 8:51 and 8:55, before the duo jumped identical 5-5.75 (1.67m) marks in the high jump.
Siefring captured the shot put with a winning throw of 40-5 (12.32m), while Ortega placed third with a mark of 37-4.50 (11.39m). In the long jump, Siefring soared a career indoor-best 20-3.50 (6.18m) to take the event, while Ortega also posted a career-long jump of 18-2.50 (5.55m).
In the finale of the event, Siefring won the 800 meters with a time of 2:14.70, while Ortega finished second in a career-best time of 2:18.83.
After four events of the men's heptathlon, junior Kamar Majid (Akron, Ohio), redshirt sophomores Malik Hudson (Cleveland, Ohio) and Preston Fillman (Hanoverton, Ohio), redshirt freshman Brandon Hochbein (Sarver, Pa.) and sophomore Dylan Hochbein (Sarver, Pa.) stand fourth (2,890), fifth (2,855), 10th (2,707), 11th (2,693) and 12th (2,656), respectively.
Fillman was the Zips' top finisher in the 60 meters with a career-best time of 7.09, while Majid took the long jump (22-11.25/6.99m) and shot put (39-6/12.04m). Hudson capped the evening pacing Akron in the high jump with a career-best jump of 6-4 (1.93m).
Senior Ariadna Ramos Gandia (Barcelona, Spain) captured the women's long jump soaring a season-best mark of 18-1.75 (5.53m).
Placing third in the Blue Division men's pole vault eclipsing 16-2.75 (4.95m) to equal a career-best indoor mark was junior Cole Wigal (Belpre, Ohio).
In the women's distance medley relay, the team of redshirt sophomore Cynthia Haas (Tallmadge, Ohio), sophomore Bailey Lack (Brunswick, Ohio), redshirt junior Mackenzie Andrews (Toowoomba, Australia) and sophomore Alyssa Thomas (Uniontown, Ohio) registered a winning time of 12:07.18.
Finishing third in the men's 5,000 meters with a time of 14:59.64 was redshirt sophomore Jeremiah Fitzgerald (Mantua, Ohio), while redshirt junior Ashley Murray (Seville, Ohio) placed fourth in the women's 5,000 crossing the line fourth in 17:59.47.
The final day of the Akron Invitational commences on Saturday, Feb. 3, with action being split between a morning and afternoon session. Action in the Blue Division commences at 10 a.m. and runs through approximately 1 p.m.
The showcase of the meet will be Saturday's Gold Invitational, which begins with a host of field events at 3 p.m. and continues with final heats on the track throughout the afternoon. The final race, the men's and women's 4x400 relay is scheduled to start at 5:40 p.m.
