FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Akron track and field team capped its efforts at the Tyson Invitational hosted by the University of Arkansas on Saturday, Feb. 10, with strong performances from the Zips' contingent of sophomore Lucy Bryan (Bristol, England), redshirt freshman Abby Helminiak (Toledo, Ohio), senior Ariadna Ramos Gandia (Barcelona, Spain), junior Curtis Richardson (Blacklick, Ohio), senior Jackie Siefring (Covington, Ohio) and junior Cody Stine (Shelby, Ohio).
"This was a great weekend to go against the best in the nation," said Akron head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell. "It gave us very valuable experience needed to do well at nationals. In a wild competition, Matt Ludwig was able come out on top against his top collegiate competition. We had a couple of school records with Mackenzie Andrews in Washington and Dara Perry at Kent. At the Kent meet we had much other success as well with several wins and some personal bests."
Bryan registered a sixth-place showing in the women's pole vault invitational eclipsing 14-1.75 (4.31m) against a field that featured five of the top-six vaulters in the country this season. Entering the competition owning the No. 4 mark (14-8/4.47m) in the NCAA in 2018, Bryan passed on the opening height of 13-1.75 (4.01m) before clearing 13-7.75 (4.16m) on her second attempt at the height. She then bettered the bar at 14-1.75 (4.31m) on her third and final run at the mark, but was unable to surpass the next mark at 14-5.50 (4.41m).
Placing fifth and sixth, respectively, in the men's high jump invitational with identical marks of 6-9.50 (2.07m) were Stine and Richardson.
Ramos Gandia garnered a fifth-place performance in the women's triple jump invitational soaring 40-9 (12.42m).
In the women's pole vault, Helminiak earned a sixth-place finish surpassing 13-1 (3.99m).
Additionally, Siefring turned in a season-best time of 24.92 in the women's 200 meters to place 40th.
