Akron Swimming and Diving Captures Fifth Consecutive Zippy Invitational Title

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron swimming and diving team claimed its fifth consecutive Zippy Invitational title on Sunday evening at Ocasek Natatorium. Throughout the three day event, Akron set two new pool records, four meet records and posted 10 NCAA Division I B Cut times.
Akron accumulated a total of 2,093 points over the course of the weekend. Buffalo recorded a second-place score of 1,422, while Oakland placed third with 1,231 points. Oakland captured the men's title with 2,376.5 points, while Bloomsburg followed with 1,528.5 point and St. Bonaventure recorded a score of 1,308.5 to place third.
The final session of the meet started out with the 1,650 freestyle. Sophomore Brooke Lamoureux (Belleville, Ontario) placed first in the event with a time of 16:37.23. Freshman McKenzie Rice (Liberty Township, Ohio) placed third while shedding over 12 seconds off of her personal best time and moving up to seventh on Akron's Top Ten All-Time Performance list as she touched the wall at 16:55.07. Finishing in forth was senior Emma King (Centerville, Ohio) with a time of 17:01.30.
Freshman Avery Movold (Prince George, British Columbia) placed second in the 200 backstroke, improving her personal best time while ranking third in the event for Akron all-time as she turned in a time of 1:56.36. Her time was also an NCAA Division I B Cut.
In the very next event, the 100 freestyle, two more Zips recorded B Cut times. Freshman Sarah Watson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) placed first with a personal best time of 49.41, which ranks fourth for Akron all-time. Finishing right behind her was senior Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario) who turned in a B Cut time of 49.49.
Freshman Andrea Fischer (St. Paul, Minn.) swam to a first-place victory from the outside lane in the 200 breaststroke. Her time of 2:14.33 improved her best time by five seconds, while also moving up to fourth on the Zips' all-time list. Junior Jackie Pash (Carmel, Ind.) touched the wall third at 2:16.63.
In the final individual event of the meet, the 200 butterfly, Akron registered two additional B Cut times. Sophomore Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland) finished first with a time of 1:57.52, which also broke the meet record that she set herself a year ago. Junior Mackenzie Vargas (Roseville, Calif.) finished second at 1:58.99.
Akron capped of the weekend the right way as the 400 freestyle relay team set a new pool and meet record. The team comprised of Fazekas, Watson, junior Morgan Waggoner (Fremont, Ohio) and freshman Sofia Henell (Linkoping, Sweden) turned in a time of 3:17.46 which ranks second for Akron all-time, just .29 seconds shy of the program record.
