2019 ADIDAS MLS PLAYER COMBINE RELEASE
AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's soccer team will be well represented as Major League Soccer announced on Thursday, Dec. 13, that Ben Lundt (Berlin, Germany) and Abdi Mohamed (Westerville, Ohio) were among the initial list of 60 NCAA Division I college players invited to participate at the 2019 MLS adidas Player Combine in Orlando, Fla.
The league's annual combine will be held in Orlando, Fla., Jan. 3-9, with representatives from all 24 MLS clubs scouting the top college prospects ahead of the Jan. 11 MLS SuperDraft in Chicago, Ill.
"I am excited for Ben and Abdi to have an opportunity to showcase their ability at the MLS Combine," Akron head coach Jared Embick commented. "They have had great careers and terrific senior seasons. I know they have great potential to play at the next level."
A committee of MLS coaches and NCAA D1 coaches from every conference selected the invitees, all of whom completed their college eligibility this season. Further invitees, including Generation adidas signings and non-college players, will be announced in coming weeks.
A three-year starter in goal for the Zips, Lundt, a second-team All-Mid-American Conference honoree this season, started each of the 22 matches he appeared in for Akron in 2018 owning 71 saves and seven shutouts. Lundt started all 64 contests he appeared in for Akron since joining the squad for the 2016 campaign. He ranks among the top-10 career lists for the Zips in goals against average (0.938), shutouts (27) and wins (41).
Mohamed started 23 of the Zips' 24 contests this season owning a goal and five assists, while adding 26 shots, including 12 on frame and helped Akron's defense to record eight shutouts.
Developing players for the next level has become commonplace for the Akron staff as 36 Zips have gone on to play professionally either in Major League Soccer, USL or overseas since 2006, including No. 1 overall picks Joao Moutinho in 2018 and Steve Zakuani in 2009, and No. 2 overall picks Darlington Nagbe in 2011 and Darren Mattocks in 2012 - just to name a few. Nagbe was part of a draft class that set MLS draft day records for most players drafted from a single school in the first round (5) and overall (8).
