Zips Swimming and Diving Breaks Pool Record on Day Two of Zippy Invitational

AKRON, Ohio – The 800 freestyle relay team shattered a pool record to help the University of Akron swimming and diving team build on its lead at day two of the Zippy Invitational on Saturday at Ocasek Natatorium.
The Zips have tallied 1,515.5 points so far to lead the women's side of competition, while Buffalo is in second with 980.5 points and Bowling Green is in third with 873. Oakland paces the men with 1,618.5 points, while Bloomsburg has a second-place total of 1,088 points and St. Bonaventure is in third with 916.
The 200 medley relay team of senior Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario), and freshmen Andrea Fischer (St. Paul, Minn.), Sarah Watson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Sofia Henell (Linkoping, Sweden) started Saturday
's finals off by placing first in a time of 1:39.04. In the 400 individual medley, junior Jackie Pash (Carmel, Ind.) (4:18.11) and senior Emma King (Centerville, Ohio) (4:20.47) placed second and third, respectively.
Watson came in first in the 100 butterfly with a personal best time of 52.44, which also ranks second for Akron all-time. Sophomore Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland) touched the wall second in a time of 53.01. Both of the swimmer's times fell under the NCAA Division I B-Cut time standard.
Akron's freshmen continued to shine as Avery Movold (Prince George, British Columbia) took first in the 200 freestyle, recording a personal best time of 1:48.38. Her time also ranks fourth on the Zips Top Ten All-Time Performance list. Henell also left her mark on the 200 freestyle top ten list, as she placed third in the event with a time of 1:48.93. She is now tied for seventh with junior Morgan Waggoner (Fremont, Ohio) on the list.
Fischer recorded a personal best time of 1:04.00 in the 100 breaststroke to place seventh overall.
In the 100 backstroke, Fazekas tied for first with Bowling Green's Daisy Platts with a time of 53.68. The senior captain's time also fell under the NCAA Division I B-Cut time standard, making it a total of five B Cut times for the Zips in two days.
Senior Karly Crail (Edgewood, Ky.) had another successful day on the boards, placing second with an NCAA B Cut score of 281.40 in the three-meter dive.
The 800 freestyle relay team of Fazekas, Nogaj, Movold and Watson finished the evening finishing first with a record-breaking time of 7:12.20. Together, their time broke the previous meet and pool record set a year ago by another Akron relay team. Their time also ranks third on the Zips' Top Ten All-Time Performance list. Coming in second in the event was another team of Zips including, King, Waggoner, sophomore Brooke Lamoureux (Belleville, Ontario) and freshman McKenzie Rice (Liberty Township, Ohio).
Akron looks to capture its fifth consecutive Zippy Invitational title on Sunday, Dec. 2, in the final day of competition. Prelims will begin at 9 a.m., while finals are scheduled for 4 p.m.
Tickets for each individual preliminary session can be purchased for $6, while tickets for final sessions are $8 each. Heat sheets will be for sale for $2. Spectators may also purchase a $35 pass, good for entry to all sessions throughout the weekend as well as heat sheets. Admission for Akron students will be free with a valid Zip Card.
Doors for spectators will open 90 minutes prior to the start of each session for admission.
