Akron Swimming and Diving Looks to Defend Title at Annual Zippy Invitational

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's swimming and diving team looks to defend its home pool, the Ocasek Natatorium, as it hosts the annual Zippy Invitational, Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
The invitational is set to span over three days, as Akron welcomes nine other schools to compete including, Bloomsburg, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Clarion, Marshall, Niagara, Oakland, St. Bonaventure and Toledo. Five of the respective schools will also bring their men's squad to compete against one another.
Competition begins on Friday, Nov. 30, with the preliminary round starting at 9 a.m. followed by diving prelims at 1 p.m. Day one finals are scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, is set up just like the first day, aside from diving prelims starting at 1:30 p.m. The meet concludes on Sunday, Dec. 2, with prelims at 9 a.m. and finals at 4 p.m.
The Zips, who are coming off their fourth consecutive Magnus Cup title, have won the Zippy Invitational for four straight years and are looking to make it five this weekend.
At last year's invitational, Akron tallied 2,059.5 points to take first, while Buffalo placed second with a score of 1,534.5, followed by Bowling Green with 1,203 points to take third.
In the men's competition, Oakland took first with a total of 2,119.5 points, while St. Bonaventure (1,368.5) and Niagara (1,197) finished in second and third, respectively.
The meet consisted of 20 events for both men and women. Out of those 20 events, Akron took home 13 first-place finishes and garnered 25 top-three places. Throughout the weekend, the Zips broke five Mid-American Conference records, nine meet records, and seven ONAT records.
Tickets for each individual preliminary session can be purchased for $6, while tickets for final sessions are $8 each. Heat sheets will be for sale for $2. Spectators may also purchase a $35 pass, good for entry to all sessions throughout the weekend as well as heat sheets. Admission for Akron students will be free with a valid Zip Card.
Doors for spectators will open 90 minutes prior to the start of each session for admission.
