TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The University of Akron men's and women's cross country teams were directed by a pair of career-best performances from redshirt juniors Mackenzie Andrews (Toowoomba, Australia) and Tevin Brown (Toledo, Ohio) as the Zips concluded their 2018 campaign at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional hosted by Indiana State University at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course on Friday, Nov. 9.
Andrews led the Zips' women's efforts turning in a team-best time of 21:40.16 to place 50th, while Brown registered his third top finish of the season Akron registering a time of 32:07.65 to place 49th.
Collectively, the Zips placed 14th in the men's race 10K, while the Akron women's squad finished 17th in the 6K.
The meet served as the qualification event for the 2018 NCAA Cross Country Championships, which will be held Saturday, Nov. 17 in Madison, Wis.
"I was very pleased with the competitive effort of our women this weekend," Akron head women's head coach Trey Brokaw commented. "Two weeks ago, they had their highest Mid-American Conference finish since 2013. They carried that momentum into the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships this weekend where it was their highest finish since 2011. The future looks bright for Akron cross country."
Hess followed Andrews across the line registering a time of 22:13.19 to finish 84th.
Rounding out Akron's scoring efforts was redshirt sophomore Alyssa Thomas (Green, Ohio), sophomore Lindsey Scarton (Berea, Ohio) and freshman Lizzy Gurko (Northfield, Ohio) as the trio recorded times of 22:26.24, 22:31.96 and 23:12.94, respectively.
Redshirt junior Elizabeth Mosier (Austintown, Ohio) and senior Ashley Murray (Seville, Ohio) capped the Zips' performances turning in times of 23:17.25 and 23:25.04.
"Mackenzie (Andrews) leadership has been outstanding this entire season and her race this weekend was the highest finish for an Akron runner since 2011. She was our top finisher and improved 34 positions from her finish last year. Additional runners that really stepped up were Alyssa (Thomas) and Lizzy (Gurko) as both fought hard in an extremely competitive field. Alyssa didn't even make the Regional travel squad last year, but stepped up huge to be our number three runner right behind team co-captain, Haley (Hess). Just like at the MAC Championships two weeks ago, Lizzy ran like a seasoned veteran despite only being a freshman. She moved up 13 spots in the last kilometer of the race and was our number five runner again. I'm so proud of this team."
Andrews, Hess and Scarton each posted career-best NCAA Great Lakes Regional times and finishes for Akron.
"We had a solid team performance today with Tevin (Brown) leading the team finishing in the top 50," said Akron head men's cross country coach Lee LaBadie. "He turned in our fifth-best regional performance in my 11 years as Akron's cross-country coach. Marc (Migliozzi) followed him across the line, while Nick (Stricklen), who had a good rebound race after the MAC Championships, Taylor (Hopkins) and Jake (Wickert) rounded out our performances. During the season our top three has been changing, so our efforts today was a good culmination to our season, especially since we weren't ranked in the top 15 of the region the entire year. We are happy with our effort today, but we are looking forward to next year to show we are a better team."
Junior Marc Migliozzi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) turned in a strong performance crossing the line next for Akron in a time of 32:36.0 to finish 75th.
Junior Nick Stricklen (Lexington, Ohio), redshirt freshman Taylor Hopkins (Heath, Ohio) and freshman Jake Wickert (Medina, Ohio) and culminated the Zips' scoring efforts with times of 32:40.4 (80th), 33:09.69 (109th) and 33:16.14 (118th), respectively.
Additionally, sophomore Andre Bollam-Godbott (Brunswick, Ohio) posted a time of 34:51.43 (169th).
Brown posted his top-career performance at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional after securing Akron's top finish with a time of 32:17.70 (80th) as a redshirt freshman in 2016.
