BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University of Akron volleyball team fell to Buffalo, 3-0 (20-25, 21-25, 19-25), in a Mid-American Conference contest on Thursday night at Alumni Arena.
Buffalo improved to 17-10 overall and 9-6 in MAC play, while Akron fell to 11-15, 3-12 MAC.
Senior Kayla Gwozdz (Temperance, Mich.) paced the Zips with 12 kills, while junior Ashley Richardson (Doylestown, Ohio) and Teagan Ochaya (Mentor, Ohio) added seven and six kills, respectively. Sophomore Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) recorded 28 assists on the night.
Sophomore Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) led the defense with 17 digs, while Weigand tallied 10. Freshman Megan Kelly (Lakewood, Ill.) and junior Elya Karsner (Frankfort, Ky.) had two blocks apiece.
As a team, Akron held a .213 hitting clip compared to Buffalo at .325.
Several runs to open the match gave the Bulls a commanding 16-5 advantage over the Zips. Akron made a late comeback but wouldn't come closer than four points, falling in the first set to Buffalo, 24-20.
The Bulls carried their momentum into the second set, taking an early 6-2 lead. A 7-4 run by the Zips tied the score at 9-all. The run saw kills from four different Zips in addition to a service ace by Sharrits. Akron inched its way into the lead and a kill by Kelly made it 16-13. Buffalo came back to take a one-point advantage, but a kill from Richardson tied the set back up at 20-20. Buffalo scored five of the final six points to take the third set, 25-21.
Buffalo took a strong 15-8 lead to begin the third set. A late series of attacking errors by the Bulls cut the Zips deficit to 21-17, however, a kill by the Bulls' Megan Wernette sealed the win for Buffalo with a 25-19 third set victory.
The Zips travel to Muncie, Ind. to take on Ball State on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m. in their season finale.
