Zips Drop 3-1 Match to Ohio

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron volleyball team fell to Ohio, 3-1 (18-25, 25-14, 11-25, 24-26), Friday night in James A. Rhodes Arena in a Mid-American Conference matchup.
The Zips fell to 11-13 overall and 3-10 in MAC play, while the Bobcats improved to 12-14, 7-6.
Akron was led by the pair of senior Kayla Gwozdz (Temperance, Mich.) and junior Ashley Richardson (Doylestown, Ohio) with 12 kills apiece, while junior Elya Karsner (Frankfort, Ky.) tied her season-best with eight kills. Sophomore Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) had a total of 36 assists and also added nine digs on the night.
Defensively, sophomore Taylor Kuruzovich (Port Matilda, Pa.) paced the Zips with 10 digs, while sophomore Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio) tallied nine. Freshmen Megan Kelly (Lakewood, Ill.) and Teagan Ochaya (Mentor, Ohio) led with three blocks each, while Gwozdz added two.
Akron recorded a hitting percentage of .207 on the night, compared to Ohio with .289.
The Zips and Bobcats opened the match alternating points until a kill by Richardson gave Akron an 8-7 advantage. A 5-0 run gave the Bobcats a 12-8 advantage. Ohio would only build on its lead from there, taking the first set, 25-18.
Akron started set two on a roll as kills from Gwozdz, Weigand and Ochaya helped to build an early 7-3 lead. Akron remained in the lead for the rest of the set, leading by as many as 12. A kill by Gwozdz sealed a second set win, 25-14, to even the match at 1-all.
The third set opened with the teams trading points until Ohio scored nine unanswered points to pull ahead to a 19-7 lead. The Zips wouldn't come closer than 10 points, while Ohio scored the final four points, leading to a 25-11 third set victory.
Ohio opened up the fourth with three short runs to pull ahead, 10-4. Akron inched its way back to tie the set at 17-all. The teams traded points until the score remained tied at 20-20. The Zips went on a 4-3 run to take the lead at 24-23. Ohio scored the final three points the win the set, 26-24 and take the match.
Akron is back in action on Saturday as they take on Kent State at home in a Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge showdown at 5 p.m. The Zips will also honor its two seniors, Kayla Gwozdz and Abbey Pawlak (Sylvania, Ohio).
