2017-18 UNITED SOCCER COACHES COLLEGIATE TEAM ACADEMIC AWARD RELEASE
Â
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -Â The University of Akron was one of 192 schools nationwide to have its men's and women's soccer teams recognized by the United Soccer Coaches as 2017-18 Collegiate Team Academic Award winners.
Â
The Zips were the only school in the Mid-American Conference to have both of their respective soccer programs honored.
Â
The Akron men's team under sixth-year head coach Jared Embick was honored for the 11th consecutive year and 12th time overall after registering a cumulative 3.02 grade point average for the 2017-18 academic year.
Â
Recognized for the eighth year in a row, the Zips' women's squad led by fourth-year head coach Noreen Herlihy posted a 3.29 GPA this past academic year.
Â
To qualify for the award, the team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the entire academic year. The team GPA is determined by adding every player's GPA, then dividing by the number of players.
Â
The Akron men's soccer team returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 6, visiting Bowling Green for a 7 p.m. tilt, while the Zips' women's squad travels to Ohio for a 4 p.m. contest on Thursday, Oct. 4.
