Akron Rifle Hosts Annual Zippy Open Rifle Tournament
October 28 | Rifle
AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron rifle team will host its sixth annual Zippy Open Rifle Tournament. The event lasts over the span of two separate weekends, beginning on Oct. 27-28, and wrapping up, Nov. 10-11. Matches will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day.
"Over 100 talented junior rifle athletes will infiltrate the Akron ranges to refine and demonstrate their athletic skills," said head rifle coach Newt Engle. "This, the 6th year for the annual event, promises to be as exciting as in years past."
Last year at the Zippy Open sophomore Wyatt Openshaw (Parkton, Md.) was the overall-NCAA champion in the smallbore division, while junior Kera Kaufman (Delmont, S.D.) took the overall champion on the air rifle range.
The Zips' rifle team was the top team in both smallbore and air rifle.
"Many of the junior competitors look forward to competing in collegiate sponsored open events like this so they can prove their worth to college coaches," said Engle. "This worked well last year for all four of Akron's talented freshmen class consisting of Antonio Gross, Patrick Schnupp, Jeanne Haverhill and Drina Kearns. The skill of talented freshmen like this, combined with outstanding upper classmen is why Akron has been in the top 10 in the nation for three consecutive weeks."
On the off weekend for the Zippy Open, Akron will host Nebraska and Morehead, Nov. 3-4.
