ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Redshirt senior Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) earned her first singles victory on the third day of competition at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Varsity Tennis Center on Saturday.
Â
Seeded ninth, Geier earned a first-round bye. She defeated Wisconsin's Anna Makarova, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6, in second round action to advance to the Round of 16.
Â
Geier faces No. 2 seed Giulia Pairone (Michigan) on Sunday.
Â
In other singles action, sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) fell to Ohio State's Danielle Wolf, 6-2, 7-5
Â
"Today was a difficult day for us in singles, with regard to how we played," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Neither Miruna or Sophia played at their peak level, but I feel like some of that can be attributed to the lack of practice and point play while here. Both opponents were big hitters and didn't allow for much rhythm, which made for difficult match play."
Â
In the Round of 16 doubles action, Vasilescu and junior Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) fell to No. 12 seed Wolf and Mary Beth Hurley of Ohio State, 8-6.
Â
"Doubles was the highlight of the day, even in the loss," he said. "Rita and Miruna played exceptionally well, and I really feel like we have found a team that is ready to take the next step and can play at this level consistently."
Â
Action at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships, hosted by the University of Michigan, at the Varsity Tennis Center continues on Sunday, Oct. 21. Admission to the six-day event is FREE.
