MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The University of Akron women's tennis team claimed two singles wins and two doubles on the first day of competition at the West Virginia's Martha Thorn Invitational on Friday.
Â
In singles action, freshman Alexis Steer (Powell, Ohio) recorded her first collegiate win with an 8-1 defeat of Cleveland State's Lauren Longo.
Â
Senior Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexico) battled West Virginia's Kirsten White to a 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 victory.
Â
Senior Luisa Echeverry (Cali Colombia) fell to West Virginia's Anne-Sophia Courteau, 6-0, 6-2.
Â
In doubles action, Flores and Echeverry defeated Duquesne's Tyra Abdalla and Maddy Adams, 7-5, and Delaware's Annie Jaskulski and Emily Gotkiewicz, 6-3.
Â
"Today was a slow start but progressively we got better and better with our match play," said Akron assistant coach Shannon Newnes.  "We definitely struggled mentally today, and this is something we have to work on the rest of the weekend and get better on generally. Doubles was a highlight with Carla and Luisa played very good doubles, showing their abilities and good cohesiveness to beat two good teams. Tomorrow we have one singles and one doubles match against more solid teams, and hopefully we can use the things we were weaker with today to be better tomorrow."
Â
Action continues on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 8 a.m. at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts.Â
