AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team travels to the ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Varsity Tennis Center on Oct. 18-23, hosted by the University of Michigan. Admission to the six-day event is FREE.
Singles Qualifying action begins on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 8 a.m. Junior Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) takes on Youngstown State's Imaan Hassim. At 9 a.m., freshman Holland Long (Rochester, N.Y.) challenges Detroit's Chelsea Apawti. At Noon, freshman Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Gaudalajara, Mexico) battles Valparaiso's Claire Czwerwonka. At 12:30 p.m., sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) faces Illinois' Shivani Ingle.
Redshirt senior Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) and sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) will compete in the Main Draw Singles, which begin on Saturday, Oct. 20.
Main Draw Doubles play begins on Friday, Oct. 19. Competing for Akron will be Vasilescu and Pedroso; Geier and Long; and Uljanov and Rosas.
"We are looking forward to getting the Midwest regional tournament underway," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "The opportunity to compete against the best players in the Midwest is exciting. This will be the strongest tournament we will play all fall, from a competition level standpoint, but I think that our team is playing at a high level right now. We have some very difficult first round opponents in the qualifying draw, so we will have to come out ready to play from the very start of the tournament."
