Women’s Tennis Picks up Two Singles Wins at ITA Midwest Regionals

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Akron women's tennis team claimed two singles wins on the first day of competition at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Varsity Tennis Center on Thursday.
In Singles Qualifying action, junior Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) defeated Youngstown State's Imaan Hassim, 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Gaudalajara, Mexico) battled Valparaiso's Claire Czwerwonka to a 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory.
Freshman Holland Long (Rochester, N.Y.) challenged Detroit's Chelsea Apawti but fell short, 7-6 (8), 6-3. In consolation action, Long fell to Eastern Illinois' Shrita Slaria, 6-3, 6-0.
Sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) fell to Illinois' Shivani Ingle, 6-3, 6-2.
In the second round of Singles Qualifying action, Pedroso dropped a 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 decision to Bowling Green's Marharita-Sophia Tavpash. Garcia concluded singles play with a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Northwestern's Hannah McColgan.
"Today was a good day overall for us," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Ceci and Rita picked up a couple good wins over strong opponents, and both played at a high level in their losses. Anna played very well today, and was a few points away from a different outcome."
Action at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships, hosted by the University of Michigan, at the Varsity Tennis Center continues on Friday, Oct. 19. Admission to the six-day event is FREE.
Main Draw Doubles play begins at 2 p.m. Competing for Akron will be sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) and Pedroso; redshirt senior Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) and Long; and Uljanov and Rosas.
Geier and Vasilescu will compete in the Main Draw Singles, which begin on Saturday, Oct. 20.
