Akron Volleyball Drops 3-0 Decision to Northern Illinois

DEKALB, Ill. – The University of Akron volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (22-25, 23-25, 23-25) Mid-American Conference contest to Northern Illinois, Friday evening, in DeKalb, Ill.
Akron fell to 10-8 overall on the season and 2-5 in MAC play. The Huskies improved to 7-15, 5-2 MAC.
"That was a back and forth battle all night. We lost three tight sets and had every opportunity to turn things in our favor," said head coach Tom Hanna. "We're a very good team that's on the verge of putting together a good run to push us up the standings. We'll bounce back tomorrow and look to find the missing few points we need to earn."
Senior Kayla Gwozdz (Temperance, Mich.) paced the Zips' offense with 13 kills. Sophomore Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio) recorded nine kills on the night, while freshman Megan Kelly (Lakewood, Ill.) set a new career high with nine kills. Sophomore setter Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) dished out 37 set assists.
On the defensive side of the ball, sophomore Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) led with 19 digs, while Kelly recorded a second career-high on the night with four blocks.
As a team, Akron hit .248, while Northern Illinois recorded a hitting clip of .278.
The score was tied on 19 different occasions throughout the first set. Neither team led by more than two points for a majority of the set. Akron held a 22-21 edge when a 3-1 run by NIU sealed a first set win of 25-22.
The second set sat tied at 4-4 when back to back kills by Kelly gave the Zips a 6-4 lead. The lead wouldn't last long as the Huskies answered with a four-point run to take a two-point lead of their own. The teams went back and forth until the score was tied 23-all. A NIU kill and an Akron error gave the Huskies a 25-23 second set win.
Set three began with the exchange of 3-0 runs by each team. Akron's short run included kills by Gwozdz and junior Ashley Richardson (Doylestown, Ohio). The score was tied, 6-6, when NIU scored five unanswered point to gain the first substantial lead of the set. Several short runs later and Akron was able to tie things back up at 21-all. The Huskies went on to score four of the final six points to take the final set, 25-23.
The Zips will travel to take on Western Michigan, Saturday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. The contest will be broadcast on ESPN3.
