AKRON, Ohio – After 18 holes of play at the 2018 Firestone Invitational, Connecticut leads the field by three strokes after an impressive 10-under par performance on Firestone Country Club's North Course.

Dartmouth's Sam Ohno leads the 90-player field with an 8-under par 64 first round score at the 7,125-yard, par-72 course. A total of seven players posted scores in the sixties as Drake Hulls (UConn) and Andrew O'Brien (Illinois State) followed Ohno with a pair of 67 (-5) tallies. Jake Gilkison (Dayton) and Nabeel Khan (UConn) posted 68 (-4) scores, while Zach Crawford (Ohio) and Ryan Tattan (Winthrop) recorded a pair of 69 (-3) performances.

The Akron Zips men's golf team fired a 286 (-2) team score , tying for fourth place with Eastern Michigan, Furman and Dayton. Ohio (-7, 281) and Dartmouth (-4, 284) currently rank second and third, respectively.

Leading Akron's scoring was junior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio) with a 2-under par 70 first round total. Redshirt freshmen Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio) also posted a sub-par score at 1-under (71), while senior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) shot even-par. Rounding out the team scoring was freshman Ignacio Puente (Seville, Spain) and sophomore Fabian Sunden (Sweden) with 73 (+1) and 75 (+3) scores.

Playing as individuals for Akron were redshirt freshman Kaleb Smith (Mansfield, Ohio) and junior Jacob Morgan (Lafayette, Ga.). Smith carded a 1-under par 71 and Morgan recorded a 79 (+7) tally.
