SOUTH BEND, Ind.- After the first day of competition at the Shamrock Invitational at the University of Notre Dame, the Akron swimming and diving team broke four pool records and found themselves in second place after the initial eight events with a score of 553.5 at the Rolfs Aquatic Center Friday night.
Â
The Zips' swimmers came in first-place in four of the swimming events, while on the boards, Akron  placed 14th.
Â
Akron jumped off the blocks quickly in the first round of the evening in the 200 medley relay. The relay squad of junior Madison Myers (Akron, Ohio), senior Paloma Marrero Munoz (Merida, Spain), junior Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario), and senior Susan Franz (Canton, Ohio) clocked in at 1:39.10. Their time broke the Rolfs Aquatic Center pool record of 1:39.34 that was set by Texas A&M in 2017.
Â
In the first individual event, the Zips claimed the top-two spots in the 100 fly. Fazekas touched the wall first with a 52.70 time, followed by freshman Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland) just behind with a 52.85 time. Both Fazekas and Nogaj broke the pool record of 53.35 that was set by Notre Dame back in 2015.
Â
Sophomore Jackie Pash (Carmel, Ind.) broke a pool record and won the 400 IM with a 4:14.23 time. That time beat the previous record of 4:14.34, which was set by Villanova in 2002.
Â
In the 100 breaststroke, Marrero claimed her first individual event win of the evening, clocking in at 1:01.20. Freshman Paula Garcia (Madrid, Spain) finished just behind for second place with a 1:01.80 time.
Â
In the final swimming event of the night, Fazekas, sophomore Ellie Nebraska (Columbus, Ohio), Nogaj, and Pash took second in the 800 freestyle relay in 7:15.34. Fazekas led off the relay with a 1:46.42 time, which broke a pool record set in 2017 by Notre Dame. Her lag time also passed junior Ragen Engel's (Springfield, Ohio) 200 freestyle program record time of 1:46.82 that was set in 2017.
Â
Â
Akron now holds four records at the Rolfs Aquatic Center Pool.
Â
Prior to the final events, the three-meter diving portion of the invitational took place. Junior Karly Crail (Edgewood, Ky.) led the Zips' diving squad with a score of 249.90.
Â
The Shamrock Invitational continues tomorrow, Jan. 26 at 9 a.m. beginning with the mile preliminary rounds. The finals will follow shortly after with an 11:30 a.m. start
