AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams return to competition this weekend traveling to University Park, Pa., to participate in the Penn State National on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26-27.
UP NEXT: The two-day meet will commence at 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 26 with the women's weight throw competition. The meet will conclude on Saturday, Jan. 27, with the women's 400 meters getting action underway at 11:20 a.m. before field events are scheduled to start at 12 p.m. with the women's high jump.
The Zips will go against a 25-team field which includes; Akron, Army, Ashland, Binghamton, Bucknell, Buffalo, Coppin State, Duquesne, La Salle, Lebanon Valley, Maryland, Monmouth, Mount St. Mary's, Muhlenberg, Norfolk State, Penn State, Pitt-Johnstown, Richmond, St. Joseph's, Temple, Towson, UMBC, Vermont, Washington and Jefferson and West Virginia.
QUOTING HEAD COACH DENNIS MITCHELL: "The Penn State National is always a meet we look forward to each year. This gets us on a high-level bank 200M track against some good competition for our events. It is not only known for a fast track, but a great place to high jump and throw."
NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams garnered recognition for their efforts this season as the Zips were ranked 38th and 41st, respectively, in the 2018 United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I Indoor Track and Field National Team Computer Rankings released on Jan. 22.
The Zips' men's squad is the highest-rated team in the Mid-American Conference and is ranked No. 18 in the latest Collegiate Indoor Dual Meet Rankings as compiled by Jesse Squire for Track and Field News. The Akron men and women are also ranked seventh and eighth, respectively, in the Great Lakes Regional polls.
ZIPS AMONG NATION'S BEST IN LATEST TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron currently has four student-athletes ranked in the top-25 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS), including Matt Ludwig (Chardon, Ohio), who is third in the men's pole vault (18-3.25/5.57m).
Also rated among the top-25 is sophomore Lucy Bryan (Bristol, England) (seventh in the women's pole vault – 14-0/4.27m), redshirt freshman Abby Helminiak (Toledo, Ohio) (14th in the women's pole vault – 13-7.25/4.15m) and senior Jackie Siefring (Covington, Ohio) (17th in the long jump – 20-0.25/6.10m).
CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP-FIVE PERFORMANCES: Junior Dara Perry (Akron, Ohio) highlighted the Zips' efforts at the annual Akron-Kent State dual meet on Jan. 19 winning the women's 60-meter hurdles in a school-record time of 8.42, breaking her own school mark by three one-hundredths of a second. Her time is the best effort in the MAC this season.
A YEAR AGO: The University of Akron men's and women's track and field team registered five victories as part of 18 overall top-five performances in final-day competition at the Penn State National on Jan. 28, 2017.
Nikki Manson captured the women's high jump surpassing 6-0.50 (1.84m) to post the then third-best indoor jump in program history.
Juniors Curtis Richardson (Blacklick, Ohio) and Cody Stine (Shelby, Ohio) finished first and second, respectively, in the men's high jump as each jumped past 7-1 (2.16m). The marks represented the third-best jumps in program history.
Senior Taron Slone (Columbus, Ohio) finished first in the men's 200 meters crossing the line in 21.79, while junior Adam Alexander (Tiffin, Ohio) bested the field in the men's pole vault surpassing 16-2 (4.93m).
Miles Baldwin won the men's 500 meters in 63.20, while anchoring the second-place 4x400 relay of Anthony Young, Mike Ohiembor and Alante, which registered a time of 3:14.31.
Sean Poholski added a second-place performance for the Zips in the men's 800 meters (1:53.36), while Ohiember was third in the men's triple jump (48-10.75/14.90m).
Senior Daziah Green (Canton, Ohio) garnered a second-place finish in the women's 200-meter invitational posting a time of 24.36.
Turning in third-place efforts in the women's pole vault and triple jump, respectively, was Lucy Bryan and senior Ariadna Ramos Gandia (Barcelona, Spain). Bryan eclipsed 14-0.50 (4.28m), while Ramos Gandia jumped 41-1.75 (12.54m).
On the opening day of competition, senior Terrell McClain (Youngstown, Ohio) captured the men's long jump with a mark of 25-2.50 (7.68).
Green equaled the fifth-fastest time in indoor program history crossing the line second in 7.53 in the finals of the women's 60 meters.
Senior Kwadarrius Smith (Orlando, Fla.) matched his then career-best indoor time of 6.75 in the finals of the 60 meters en route to placing second.
Matt Ludwig registered the then fifth-best jump (17-9/5.41m) in program history en route to placing second in the men's pole vault invitational. Matt Rowland eclipsed 17-1 (5.21m) to finish third.
Daniella Johnson finished third in the 60 meters with a time of 7.62 after placing fourth in the long jump with a mark of 18-8 (5.69m).
