Akron Men's Soccer Adds Three to Roster for 2018 Campaign

AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron head men's soccer coach Jared Embick has announced the additions of Dennis Cole (Freetown, Sierra Leone/Dunn School/Sacramento State), Leonard Sohn (Richmond Hill, Ontario/Bill Crothers Secondary/Manhattan) and Kotaro Umeda (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield/Louisville) to the Zips' roster for the upcoming 2018 campaign.
All three student-athletes have enrolled at Akron for the Spring Semester and will be eligible to compete for the Zips during the squad's exhibition tilts.
A sophomore midfielder, Cole comes to Akron after playing in 13 games as a freshman at Sacramento State, registering a pair of assists on the strength of seven shots, including a pair on goal.
Cole played four years for coach at Dunn School in Los Olivos, Calif., where he was a two-time all-California Interscholastic Federation first-team selection. He helped his squad capture a pair of CIF Championships in 2015 and 2017. As a senior, he recorded 12 goals and added 16 assists en route to directing his team to a 17-1-1 record and a No. 8 ranking in California and No. 31 rating in the nation by MaxPreps.
A junior defender, Sohn joins the Zips after playing his first two campaigns at Manhattan where he appeared in 31 contests, including 23 starts, posting a pair of assists on 14 shots, including four on goal. As a freshman he started all 17 games for the Jaspers and tallied an assist on 10 shots, before starting in six of his 14 appearances in 2017, recording an assist on four shots.
Sohn played his prep soccer at Bill Crothers Secondary School in Markham, Ontario, where he helped his squad to the York Region Athletic Association Championship as a senior. Additionally, he was a member of the Ontario Provincial.
A redshirt sophomore midfielder, Umeda played in two games this past season for Louisville after redshirting as a true freshman during the 2016 campaign.
Umeda played club soccer for Internationals Soccer Club from 2014-16, where he was named No. 12 recruit in Great Lakes region by TopDrawerSoccer.com, No. 4 recruit in Ohio by College Soccer News and was included in the Top 160 nationally in the class of 2016 by College Soccer News. Additionally, he played as a freshman and sophomore at Mayfield High School earning all-conference honors.
Embick also announced that sophomore Nick Hinds (Plantation, Fla.) has foregone his final two years of eligibility to sign professionally with the Seattle Sounders 2 squad in the United Soccer League. Additionally, redshirt junior Shane Wiedt (Akron, Ohio) and freshmen Marc Alexander (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Codie Lynd (Belleville, Ill.) have transferred.
