Nicholson Leads Zips Final Round, Akron Finishes 935 (+71) at Golfweek Challenge

Vail, Colo. – Junior Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio) led the Akron Zips women's golf team in the final round of Golfweek Conference Challenge as the Zips finished 18th overall with a 935 (+71) tournament total on Wednesday.

After opening the tournament with back-to-back 78 (+6) performances, Nicholson carded a 1-under par 71 score. Nicholson started the round on hole No. 16 and played even-par golf through three holes. On the 418-yard, par-4 first hole, Nicholson moved to 1-over par and three holes later added a second bogey. With six holes left to play, Nicholson got a stroke back with a birdie on the 150-yard, par3 hole No. 10.

The former Mid-American Conference champion collected four consecutive pars to stay at 1-over par at the Red Sky Golf Club's Fazio Course. On the final hole of the 54-hole tournament, Nicholson buried an eagle putt to move to 1-under par, finishing the tournament 51st overall with a 227 (+11) tally.

Leading the Zips' overall scoring efforts for the third straight tournament was freshman Jacinta Pikunas (Youngstown, Ohio). Pikunas recorded a 74 (+2) final 18-hole round to go along with a pair of 73 (+1) performances. She completed the 54-hole event with a 220 (+4) ledger to finish 19th overall on the leaderboard.

Senior Pader Her (Holt, Mich.) followed with a 240 (+24) with a pair of 81 (+9) scores and a 78 (+6) total. Sophomore Allyson Wentworth (Stewartsville, N.J.) and freshman Abbie Pearce (Green, Ohio) rounded out the scoring with 251 (+32) and 261 (+45) scores, respectively.

Denver held on to win the 18-team field team title, which included 16 Top 100 programs and seven Top 50 programs, with an 872 (+8) tournament total. Arizona's Haley Moore earned medalist honors with a 7-under par 209 performance.

The Zips will be back in action at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational hosted by Kentucky. The three-day event is scheduled for Friday through Sunday, Oct. 6-8, at the Big Blue Golf Course in Lexington, Ky.
