Akron, Ohio – The Akron Zips women's golf team traveled to Vail, Colo. for the three-day Golfweek Conference Challenge hosted by Denver on Monday through Wednesday, Sept. 25-27.
"We feel honored to be representing the Mid-American Conference at the Golfweek Conference Challenge," Zips' head coach Jenny King said. "This might be the best field that we will compete against in the history of our program, and we are all looking forward to the challenge. Not only will this be different conditions to play in due to the altitude, but the golf course itself will be a great test. I can't wait to see how this makes us a better team when it's all said and done."
The 54-hole tournament is scheduled for three-consecutive 18-hole rounds at the Red Sky Golf Club's Fazio Course. At an elevation of 7,650 feet above sea level, Tom Fazio's 6,216-yard, par-72 design winds through both open sage-covered hills and a dense aspen forest. The Fazio Course merges dramatic vistas of Vail's Back Bowls with a variety of terrains to gratify players of all skill levels.
The 18-team field consists of hosts Denver, Akron, Arizona, Campbell, Central Arkansas, Charleston, Coastal Carolina, Eastern Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan, Mercer, Old Dominion, Pepperdine, Sacramento State, San Diego State, Southern Methodist, Texas Christian, and UC – Riverside.
Akron's scoring leader freshman Jacinta Pikunas (Youngstown, Ohio) headlines the starting five. Pikunas is coming off her first collegiate win and earned MAC Golfer of the Week honors while maintaining a 72.2 stroke average. Junior Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio) and senior Pader Her (Holt, Mich.) follow, while freshman Abbie Pearce (Green, Ohio) and sophomore Allyson Wentworth (Stewartsville, N.J.) round out the Zips' Top 5.
Monday's first round is scheduled to begin with tee times starting at Noon Eastern Standard Time. Akron will open the first round at hole No. 10 with Wentworth leading off at 12:45, followed by Her (12:54), Pearce (1:03), Nicholson (1:12), and Pikunas (1:21).
